Chapter 14 - The Final Threat “Don’t sign it, Claire!”

The sharp shout sliced through the suburban night air, stopping Detective Reynolds’ hand in mid-air. Claire froze, her fingers hovering inches from the silver pen.
From the shadows near the edge of the driveway, where the federal SUVs were idling with their red and blue lights flashing against the manicured lawns, a figure lunged forward. It was Mark. Despite the heavy steel handcuffs binding his wrists behind his back, he had managed to wrench himself away from the distracted junior deputy escorting him toward the cruiser.
Agent Vance spun around instantly, her hand dropping to her holster, but she held her fire as Mark stumbled forward onto the front lawn, his bearded face twisted in absolute, unhinged desperation.
“She’s lying to you, Detective! The whole thing is a setup!” Mark screamed, his voice cracking violently as he fell to his knees on the grass, his dark jeans stained with mud and grass clippings. He glared up at Claire standing on the porch, his eyes wide and bloodshot. “You think you win, Claire? You think walking away with the house and the kid makes you safe?”
Claire didn't flinch. She stepped out onto the porch, standing tall in her blue cardigan and dark jeans, looking down at the man who had terrorized her for a decade. Her breathing was slow, calm, and utterly composed.
“It’s over, Mark. The ledgers are gone, the shell companies are dissolved, and your brother is in the back of a cruiser,” Claire said, her voice carrying a quiet finality that cut deeper than any weapon.
“You missed one thing!” Mark laughed hysterically, throwing his head back toward the night sky. “The trust account in the Cayman Islands! The one with the contingency fund! If I don't enter the authorization code within the next sixty seconds, an automated protocol liquidates every single remaining cent into an untraceable offshore account that neither the feds nor your little zoning board can ever touch!”
Agent Vance stepped up beside him, grabbing him firmly by the shoulder and hauling him back up to his feet. “Shut your mouth, Palmer, or I’ll add terroristic threats to your list of charges.”
“Check your phone, Detective!” Mark yelled, thrashing against the deputy. “Check your email right now! The timer is ticking!”
Detective Reynolds’ own phone buzzed loudly in her trench coat pocket. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and went completely pale. Her eyes darted up to Claire, wide with sudden, genuine alarm.
“He’s right,” Detective Reynolds whispered, her voice trembling. “An automated wire transfer just initiated. Fifty thousand dollars leaving your personal escrow account every five seconds. If we don’t override it right now, you’ll be completely bankrupt by midnight.”
Mark broke into a maniacal, victorious grin, blood staining his teeth as he was shoved into the back of the patrol car.

Claire looked down at the silver pen in her hand, then looked out at the flashing lights illuminating the cul-de-sac. With absolute, unyielding calm, she raised the pen, locked eyes with Mark through the tinted cruiser window, and made her final move.
