Chapter 11 - The Warehouse Liquidation

The shattered glass crunched beneath Claire’s shoes as she stepped further into the ruined kitchen. Viktor laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated off the tile backsplash. Agent Vance kept her Sig Sauer firmly pressed against his sternum, her finger resting lightly on the trigger guard, but Viktor didn't seem to care about the federal firearm at all. He was playing a different game entirely.
“The warehouse down on Industrial Parkway,” Viktor sneered, his eyes darting toward Claire with malicious satisfaction. “Everything Mark couldn't hide in the accounts was converted into physical inventory. High-grade industrial machinery, imported electronics, and raw materials. Bought, paid for, and legally registered under an import-export license held by a shell corporation in Zurich.”
Agent Vance pressed the barrel harder into his chest. “That’s international trafficking and asset concealment. You’ve just guaranteed yourself a twenty-year federal sentence, Mr. Novak.”
“Let’s talk about sentencing after we talk about leverage,” Viktor countered smoothly, tilting his head. He looked straight at Claire, ignoring the federal badge entirely. “You want your freedom, Mrs. Palmer? You want your clean slate, your house, and your little girl’s future? You can have it all back. Every single penny. But there’s a catch.”
Claire stood motionless, her blue cardigan hugging her tight against the chill wind blowing in through the broken patio door. Her breathing remained steady, a masterclass in emotional restraint despite the chaos surrounding them.
“I don’t negotiate with criminals, Viktor,” Claire said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal chill that made Viktor’s smug smile falter for a fraction of a second.
“You do when the inventory isn’t just electronics,” Viktor whispered, leaning forward despite the gun barrel. “It’s the collateral for the entire neighborhood development project. The permits are tied directly to your name, Claire. Mark forged your signature on the municipal bonds. If the warehouse goes down for illicit trade, the entire subdivision is condemned by dawn. Every family on this street loses their home. Including you.”
Agent Vance glanced sideways at Claire, her professional demeanor showing a flicker of genuine shock. “He’s right. If municipal bonds are tied to fraudulent inventory under your name, the city can seize the land under eminent domain.”
Silence descended on the kitchen, broken only by the distant wail of another approaching siren. Sophia whimpered softly from the hallway, clutching a corner of Claire’s blue cardigan that trailed behind her.
Claire looked at Viktor. The man thought he had checkmated her. He thought she would sacrifice her own safety to save the neighbors who had ignored her screams for years.
“You assume I care about the neighborhood,” Claire said softly, a dangerous glint appearing in her blue eyes.
Viktor’s eyebrows arched in disbelief. “They’re your neighbors.”
“They watched my daughter cry through their windows and pretended not to notice,” Claire replied coldly. She took another step closer, reaching out to touch the edge of the broken patio door. “Let the city take the land.”

Viktor’s jaw dropped. Before he could utter another word, a heavy shadow fell across the kitchen doorway, and a booming voice echoed from the front hall.
