Chapter 8 - The Front Porch Intrusion

The deafening crash echoed up the wooden staircase, sounding like a heavy piece of furniture tipping over onto the hardwood foyer. Sophia let out a high-pitched scream from the hallway closet where she was supposed to be hiding.

Claire’s blood ran cold. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering uselessly against the pink carpet of the nursery. Without a word, she bolted past Agent Vance and Mark, sprinting down the hallway like a sprinter leaving the starting blocks.

“Sophia!” Claire screamed, her voice cracking with terror.

She reached the top of the stairs and threw herself down them, her blue cardigan fluttering behind her. As she hit the ground floor, the front door—which had been left ajar during the chaos—swung completely open, slamming against the interior wall with splintering force.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stood in the entryway, wearing a heavy black leather jacket over a plaid flannel shirt. His face was half-hidden beneath the brim of a baseball cap, but the thick, unkempt brown hair and heavy jawline were unmistakable. It was Leo, Mark’s younger brother, fresh out of the county precinct and looking for absolute vengeance.

In his right hand, Leo held a heavy iron fireplace poker, its tip blackened with soot.

“Where is it, Claire? What did you do with the car?” Leo roared, his voice thick with drunken fury as he stepped across the shattered remains of a decorative ceramic vase on the floor.

Sophia’s bedroom door upstairs creaked open slightly, and a small pink hoodie peeked out.

“Get back inside, Sophia! Lock the door!” Claire shouted, planting her feet firmly in the middle of the foyer, blocking the staircase.

Leo laughed, a harsh, grating sound that lacked any human warmth. He stepped forward, swinging the iron poker lazily through the air, creating a vicious whoosh sound.

“You think you’re smart, don’t you, Claire? Playing detective while Mark takes the fall?” Leo snarled, taking another aggressive step toward her. “Hand over the keys to the tow lot or I’ll smash every bone in your legs before I take the kid.”

Claire didn't back down an inch. Her breathing was deep, controlled, and steady. She raised her chin, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal intensity.

“You take one step closer to these stairs, Leo, and you won’t just lose the lockbox,” Claire whispered, her voice dropping into a deadly register.

Leo sneered, raising the iron poker high above his shoulder, preparing to strike.

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps thudded down the stairs behind Claire, accompanied by the sharp, metallic click of a federal weapon being unholstered.
