Chapter 6 - The Nursery Revelation The word hung in the damp evening air like a toxic cloud. The nursery.

Claire’s breath hitched for a fraction of a second, the cold mask of absolute control cracking ever so slightly. Agent Vance noticed the micro-expression instantly, her hand freezing inches from the cold steel handcuffs resting on her belt.

“Mr. Palmer, step away from your wife. Put your hands behind your back,” Agent Vance commanded, her voice sharpening into a lethal edge.

Mark didn’t move. He kept his eyes locked on Claire, a grotesque sense of triumph washing over his features. The panic was gone, replaced by the desperate, manic glee of a cornered animal holding a detonator.

“Go on, Claire. Go check the pink walls you painted for Sophia,” Mark taunted, his voice dripping with malice. “You thought you cleaned out the digital ledgers? The hard drives are one thing. But the physical collateral? That’s insured under a different name entirely. A name you signed without reading three years ago.”

Claire’s mind raced. Three years ago—the refinancing of the mortgage. The stack of papers Mark had shoved across the kitchen table while Sophia was running a high fever. She had trusted him. A fatal mistake.

“You didn’t,” Claire whispered, the first genuine tremor of dread creeping into her tone.

“Oh, I did,” Mark laughed softly, keeping his hands loose at his sides, knowing the federal agent wouldn't risk tackling him near the porch if civilian lives were potentially compromised. “If the feds seize this house tonight, they seize everything inside it. Including the trust deeds hidden in the floorboards of Sophia’s room. You want my freedom, Claire? You just gave up your daughter’s future to get it.”

Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Mark’s shoulder and spinning him around against the hood of his truck with a sharp, metallic clack of cuffs locking around his wrists.

“Stop resisting, Mr. Palmer! You’re adding obstruction of justice to wire fraud,” Agent Vance ordered, forcing him down.

Mark didn't care. He twisted his neck, glaring past the federal agent at Claire, who was already sprinting toward the front door.

“Go ahead, supermom! Break the door down!” Mark screamed over the crunch of gravel.

Claire slammed her palm against the heavy oak front door, shoving it open with a crash. She raced through the dark hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs, and threw open the door to Sophia’s room, only to freeze dead in her tracks at what was sitting in the middle of the pink-carpeted floor.
