Chapter 1 - The First Sucker Punch

The golden hues of the suburban sunset bled across the asphalt of Maple Street, casting long, menacing shadows over the trimmed lawns.
Claire stood firmly on the concrete driveway, her wavy brown hair catching the dying light. Her blue cardigan hugged her shoulders over a dark blue top, while her dark jeans grounded her stance. Clinging tightly to her right side was eight-year-old Sophia, her small frame swallowed by a bright pink hoodie, trembling as she buried her face in her mother's waist. Facing them with coiled, venomous energy was Mark, his thirty-five-year-old frame hardened by years of gym routines. His short brown hair was messy, a thick beard shadowed his jaw, and white boxing hand wraps bound his wrists over a grey t-shirt and dark jeans.
At their feet, a single red leather boxing glove lay discarded on the pavement, a brutal symbol of domestic dominance.
Mark stepped closer, his chest heaving, his eyes locking onto Claire with vicious condescension.
“Put the gloves on, Claire, the next one will leave you unable to stand,” Mark snarled, his voice carrying across the quiet neighborhood.
Claire didn’t flinch. Her breathing remained steady, a stark contrast to his manufactured panic. She pulled Sophia a fraction closer, feeling the frantic beating of her daughter's heart.
Mark loomed larger, invading her personal space, his knuckles twitching.
“So stand next to Mr. Bright, Sophia, go stand next to Mr. Palmer right now. You still think this is going your way?” Mark demanded, pointing a gloved hand toward the neighboring houses where curious blinds fluttered.
Sophia sobbed softly, refusing to let go of her mother. Mark’s face twisted further into a mask of pure rage. He clenched his fists, baring his teeth in a snarl that exposed the ugly vein pulsing at his temple.
“Teach her a lesson! What do you think you can do?” Mark shouted, his voice cracking with unhinged authority.
Claire looked directly into his eyes. There was no fear in her gaze, only a cold, unyielding confidence that chilled the warm evening air.
“You're about to find out,” Claire whispered sharply.

Without breaking eye contact, Claire reached down, her fingers brushing the discarded boxing glove on the concrete, while a distant police siren began wailing in the north end of the zip code.
