Chapter 5 - The Federal Intrusion

The blinding LED headlights of the unmarked SUV sliced across the manicured lawns, casting long, distorted silhouettes against the siding of the suburban homes. Mark squinted against the glare, his hand instincts taking over as he raised a taped forearm to shield his eyes. The heavy thud of the passenger door closing echoed sharply in the quiet cul-de-sac.
Agent Sarah Vance strode purposefully up the driveway. Her tailored federal blazer was crisp, her badge catching the amber glow of the streetlamp above. She bypassed Mark entirely, her sharp eyes locking directly onto Claire.
“Mrs. Palmer?” Agent Vance asked, her voice clipped and professional.
“Agent Vance,” Claire replied, offering a brief, firm nod. “You’re late.”
Mark spun around, his panic morphing into defensive fury. He stepped between the federal agent and his wife, puffing out his chest despite the stark asymmetry of the power dynamic.
“Who the hell are you? You can't just roll up onto private property without a—,” Mark started, jabbing a taped finger toward the agent’s face.
Agent Vance didn’t even blink. With fluid, practiced precision, she sidestepped Mark as if he were nothing more than an inconvenient traffic cone, pulling a thick manila folder from under her arm.
“Markus Palmer,” Agent Vance said, reading from a printed sheet without making eye contact with him. “You’re being served with a federal freeze on all corporate assets, personal accounts, and subsidiary holdings tied to Horizon Ventures LLC.”
Mark’s jaw dropped. The fight drained out of him entirely, leaving him looking smaller, stripped of his bravado. “That’s impossible. Horizon is completely clean. It’s an independent shell—I mean, an independent entity!” He caught himself, turning a glare of absolute betrayal toward Claire. “You told them about the shell company.”
“I gave them the ledger, the encryption keys, and the offshore routing numbers you were stupid enough to email to your personal account,” Claire said, stepping past Agent Vance to stand toe-to-toe with her husband. The cold, unyielding confidence in her eyes was terrifying.
Mark looked from Claire to the federal agent, realizing the sheer depth of the trap he had walked into. But as Agent Vance reached into her jacket for a pair of steel handcuffs, a strange, chilling smile crept onto Mark’s bearded face.

“You think I kept the money in the offshore accounts, Claire?” Mark whispered, his voice dangerously low. “Check the nursery.”
