Chapter 8 - The Damning Signature

The faded ink on the open journal page seemed to pulse under the harsh ballroom lights, casting a long, dark shadow over the glittering floor. Julian’s hand instinctively reached out toward the leather-bound book, his fingers trembling violently as if the paper itself were radiating a toxic heat. His lips parted, but no words came out; the defense he had built over three decades had crumbled into ash in a matter of seconds.

"You forged that," Julian finally managed to rasp out, though the conviction in his voice was entirely hollow. "That signature... it's an old draft. It was never filed."

"Keep lying to yourself, old man," Victor replied coldly, snapping the journal shut with a crisp, definitive thud that echoed sharply against the marble walls. "It was filed in a secret federal archive that was unsealed just forty-eight hours ago. The exact same time my firm initiated the hostile takeover of your company's primary assets."

Clara watched the exchange with a rising sense of nausea. The grand life she had known, the elite social circles, the security, and the untouchable status of her family name—it was all built on a foundation of deception, blackmail, and systemic destruction. She looked at her father, searching his face for the honorable man who had raised her, but all she saw was a cornered stranger drowning in his own past sins.

"You didn't just target my child, did you?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as the horrifying truth dawned on her. "This whole wedding gala... the corporate merger... the attack on the gift table... it was all an elaborate trap to lure my father into the open."

Victor turned his gaze toward Clara, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his sharp features. He tilted his head slightly, acknowledging her deduction with a slow nod. "Sharp mind, Clara. It runs in the family, unfortunately. Eleanor was merely a convenient instrument. Her hatred for you and your bloodline made her easy to manipulate. I simply whispered the right suggestions into her ear, provided the encrypted offshore routing numbers, and let her natural cruelty do the heavy lifting."

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp of betrayal, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at Victor in horror. "You... you used me? You told me this would protect the Vance legacy!"

"The Vance legacy was bankrupt the moment your husband decided to play God with my father's life," Victor snapped back, his voice dripping with venom. "You were just a pawn on the board, Eleanor. And now, the queen is about to be taken."

Marcus, who had been standing quietly in the background monitoring his phone, suddenly stepped forward, his face pale as he stared at a freshly downloaded email notification.

"Mr. Vance," Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly. "You need to look at this right now. The federal receivership... it just went live across all your corporate accounts."
