Chapter 4 - The Hidden Accomplice

The heavy mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom groaned slightly as a draft swept through the grand hall, carrying the faint scent of rain from the outside world. Eleanor’s eyes darted toward the exit, calculating the distance, the probability of escape, and the utter devastation awaiting her if she attempted to run in her tight skirt. Her chest heaved against the heavy fabric of her beige dress, the rhinestones catching the light like microscopic eyes judging her every twitch.
"Nobody helped me," Eleanor spat out, though the conviction in her tone had dissolved into a defensive whine. "I acted alone because that child is a stain on this family's pristine reputation. You know it as well as I do, Julian. We built this dynasty on purity and absolute control. A bastard grandchild brings ruin!"
"Shut your filthy mouth," Julian roared, his control finally snapping. He closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, stopping just inches from her face. His hand balled into a fist at his side, trembling with the restraint required not to strike her down right where she stood. "That child is my flesh and blood. The only stain on this family is the venom dripping from your tongue."
Marcus remained a calm anchor amidst the emotional turbulence, his thumb hovering over the phone screen. He cleared his throat, a subtle sound that cut through the shouting match like a razor. "With all due respect, Mrs. Vance, the financial routing numbers don't match a solo operation. The funds were cleared through an intermediary account managed by a private wealth firm in Zurich. A firm that strictly requires dual signatures."
Clara pushed herself up into a seated position against the base of the gift table, ignoring the dull ache radiating through her lower back. She stared at Eleanor with eyes wide with betrayal. "Who was it, Eleanor? Who signed off on your little project with you?"
Eleanor’s lips pressed into a thin, white line of stubborn defiance. She tilted her chin upward, reverting to her aristocratic armor, refusing to yield an inch of ground despite the digital noose tightening around her neck. "You will never find out. The person who holds the second key is far more powerful than you miserable peasants could ever comprehend."

"Try me," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shadowed archway behind the main staircase.
