Chapter 10 - The Secret Trust

The embossed envelope felt uncomfortably heavy in Clara’s trembling fingers as she accepted it from Victor Thorne. The heavy cream-colored cardstock was stamped with a faded wax seal bearing an insignia she had never seen before—a stylized mountain range intertwined with an oak tree, the crest of the original Thorne family estate before the liquidation thirty years ago.

Julian strained against the two security guards pinning him to the marble floor, his face pressed against the cold stone. "Don't touch it, Clara!" he shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "It's a trap! Whatever is inside that envelope is another forged document designed to sign away your remaining rights!"

Clara hesitated, her thumb hovering over the wax seal. She looked from her desperate, disgraced father on the floor to Victor, whose amber eyes remained fixed on her with an intense, unreadable scrutiny. The sheer magnitude of betrayal hung heavily in the air; she no longer knew who to trust, what history was real, or whether the ground beneath her feet would remain solid for another minute.

"Why are you giving this to me?" Clara asked, her voice steadying despite the chaos surrounding them. "If you wanted to destroy my family entirely, why leave me a loophole?"

Victor offered a faint, melancholy smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, stripping away his corporate predator persona for a single, fleeting heartbeat. "Because, Clara, not all sins of the fathers must be visited upon the children. Your grandfather, Thomas Vance, tried to stop the illegal seizure of my family's assets at the very end. He wrote this trust specifically to protect the innocent bloodline—to ensure that if his son—your father—ever abused his power, a safety net would remain."

Clara swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She broke the wax seal with her fingernail, pulling out a thick sheaf of parchment covered in delicate, elegant handwriting. Her eyes scanned the legal phrasing, the paragraphs outlining property deeds, offshore accounts, and corporate shares that legally bypassed Julian’s receivership entirely.

It was a complete financial lifeline, positioning her as the primary majority shareholder of the very real estate conglomerate her father had spent a lifetime building.

"This... this gives me controlling interest," Clara whispered, looking up in sheer disbelief. "It supersedes the federal receivership?"

"Provided you exercise your voting rights before midnight tonight," Victor replied smoothly, checking his Rolex once more. "Which leaves you approximately three hours to make a choice."

"A choice between what?" Clara demanded, tightening her grip on the papers.

Victor stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. "Between signing the company over to Thorne Global Holdings to settle your father's debts... or standing beside a man who tried to murder your unborn child."
