Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy silence that followed Victor Thorne’s declaration felt suffocating, pressing down on the grand ballroom like a physical weight. Julian’s face darkened from a deep flush of rage into a pale, dangerous mask of resolve. He recognized the name instantly; Victor Thorne was a corporate butcher known for asset stripping and destroying multi-generational family estates with ruthless, calculated efficiency.

"You have twenty seconds to walk out those double doors," Julian growled, his voice carrying an icy finality that left no room for negotiation, "or I will ensure your corporate charter is shredded before the sun rises."

Victor chuckled softly, a low, dismissive sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. He didn't flinch. Instead, he took another leisurely step forward, his amber eyes scanning the ruins of the pink gift boxes scattered across the marble floor as if inspecting damaged merchandise.

"Threats, Julian? At a time like this?" Victor shook his head slowly, clicking his tongue in mild disapproval. "You really have no idea what kind of game you're playing, do you? You think this is about real estate? You think my interest in your family's assets is purely financial?"

Clara pulled herself up entirely, leaning heavily against the mahogany table for support. Her legs felt like lead, but the sheer wave of indignation burning through her veins kept her upright. "What are you talking about?" she demanded, her voice sharp and ringing with authority despite her physical weakness. "Stop speaking in riddles and say what you came here to say."

Victor’s gaze drifted from Julian to Clara, lingering on her pale face and the slight swell of her abdomen beneath the white silk dress. A strange, unreadable shadow crossed his features for a fraction of a second—something resembling fleeting regret before it was instantly locked away behind his cold, calculating facade.

"Ask your dear father," Victor murmured smoothly, tilting his head toward Julian. "Ask him why my family's estate was liquidated thirty years ago under very similar circumstances. Ask him whose signature was on the bankruptcy papers that drove my father to the edge of a cliff."

Julian’s breath hitched. The formidable, protective barrier he had maintained around Clara suddenly wavered, his broad shoulders slumping just a fraction of an inch as the color drained completely from his face.

"You're... Arthur Thorne's son," Julian whispered, the words escaping his lips like a long-buried secret being dragged into the blinding sunlight.

Victor’s smile vanished entirely, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated venom. "Bingo, old man. And now, the debt is finally coming due."
