Chapter 2 - The Digital Evidence

The ambient chatter of the ballroom died down entirely, replaced by a suffocating hush that seemed to drop the room's temperature by ten degrees. Julian remained frozen in a protective crouch over Clara, his broad shoulders shielding her from the predatory gaze of the crowd. Across the aisle, Eleanor Vance stood rigid, her posture radiating defensive arrogance, though a faint sheen of nervous sweat had begun to bead along her hairline. She smoothed the front of her rhinestone-encrusted beige dress with claw-like fingers, refusing to break eye contact.

Marcus stepped forward from the shadows of the tall marble pillars, his black suit absorbing the harsh overhead light. He held his smartphone up at eye level, the screen glowing with a crisp, looping video that captured every damning detail of Eleanor’s premeditated shove. The slow-motion playback clearly showed the exact coordinate of Eleanor’s heel driving into the mahogany table leg just a fraction of a second before Clara lost her balance.

"I believe this belongs to the public record," Marcus said, his voice remarkably steady despite the brewing storm.

Clara let out a ragged breath, clutching her abdomen as Julian gently eased her into a semi-reclined position against his knees. The physical pain was a dull, persistent throbbing, but the psychological horror was sharper, slicing through her defenses. She watched Marcus press play again, the audio capturing the distinct scrape of Eleanor’s shoe against the floorboards. It was undeniable, mathematical proof of an assassination attempt disguised as a clumsy mishap at a family celebration.

Eleanor’s facade finally began to fracture, a microscopic twitch betraying her panic around the corners of her mouth. "That video is manipulated," she snapped, her voice rising an octave in desperate defiance. "Deepfake technology has ruined modern society. Anyone with a laptop can frame an innocent woman!"

"Shut up, Eleanor," Julian growled, rising to his full height. He loomed over her, his grey-flecked beard bristling with suppressed rage. "The metadata is timestamped. The cloud backup happened in real time. You didn't just try to ruin a party; you tried to murder my bloodline."

Marcus swiped across his screen, pulling up a secondary file that made the color drain entirely from Eleanor’s face. "And that's not even the most interesting file stored in this particular folder."
