Chapter 11 - The Midnight Deadline

The grandfather clock near the ballroom entrance chimed nine times, each deep, resonant tone vibrating through the floorboards like a hammer blow. Three hours left. Three hours to decide the fate of a multi-million-dollar empire, a ruined family, and an unborn child whose very existence had sparked a war.
Julian finally stopped struggling against the guards, his chest heaving as he stared up at Clara from the floor with tear-filled, bloodshot eyes. The formidable corporate titan was entirely gone, replaced by a broken old man begging for mercy from his own daughter.
"Clara... please," Julian wheezed, his voice choked with raw emotion. "If you sign over the shares to Thorne, we are destitute. Everything I built, everything I sacrificed for your future... gone. He will strip the company down to its bones and leave us with nothing."
"You left his family with nothing thirty years ago, Dad!" Clara shouted back, the suppressed grief and fury finally boiling over into a sharp, piercing cry. Tears streamed down her cheeks, catching the harsh overhead light as she looked down at the man who had raised her while lying to her face every single day of her life. "You murdered his father's legacy! You built our entire life on stolen ground, and you tried to kill my baby to cover up your tracks!"
Julian flinched as if he had been physically struck, squeezing his eyes shut as a ragged sob escaped his lips.
Victor stood quietly a few feet away, watching the family drama unfold with cold, detached satisfaction. He gestured to the two guards, who immediately released Julian and stepped back, allowing the older man to awkwardly push himself up from the marble floor. Julian clutched his bruised arm, leaning heavily against the mahogany table, looking smaller and frailer than ever before.
Marcus stepped forward, his phone still gripped tightly in his hand, his expression deeply troubled. He looked between Clara and Victor, his professional detachment slipping away to reveal genuine human concern.
"Clara, you can't trust Thorne either," Marcus warned quietly, keeping his voice low enough to avoid Victor's immediate attention. "I just ran a background check on Thorne Global's recent acquisitions. Every company they absorb vanishes within six months, their assets liquidated, their employees cast out. If you sign those papers over to him, he won't just punish your father—he will obliterate everything in this city."
Clara’s mind raced. She was trapped between two monsters: a father who had committed fraud and tried to orchestrate the murder of her child, and a vengeful adversary who used corporate warfare as a tool for generational retribution. Neither path offered safety; both paths led to destruction.
"There has to be a third option," Clara said, her voice dropping into a steely, resolute tone that surprised even herself.

Victor raised an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement dancing in his amber eyes. "There is always a third option, my dear. But it requires a sacrifice neither of the men in this room are prepared to make."
