Chapter 4: Whispers in the Dark**

At midnight, Clara couldn't sleep. The tension of the dinner hung over her like a suffocating blanket. Needing a glass of water, she crept down the quiet hallway, avoiding the floorboards that creaked.
Passing the library, a faint sliver of light caught her eye. She peered through the crack in the door.
Raymond was on the phone, speaking in hushed, venomous tones. "...I don't care about the girl. If she becomes an obstacle, make it look like another tragic household accident. But we need Julian's thumbprint on the proxy transfer before Friday. Push the medication dose tomorrow."
A chill ran down Clara’s spine. They were deliberately poisoning Julian's daily treatments.
She turned to flee, but her elbow caught an antique brass vase on the pedestal outside the door. The loud clatter echoed through the silence of the corridor.
"Who’s there?" Raymond’s voice barked from inside.
Panic gripped Clara's chest. Footsteps rushed toward the door. Just as the handle began to turn, a strong hand grabbed Clara by the collar and pulled her into an adjacent hidden alcove behind a renaissance tapestry.
Julian’s chest pressed against her back, his hand firmly covering her mouth. They held their breath as Raymond stepped into the hall, looked around the empty corridor, cursed under his breath, and walked away.
When the danger passed, Julian turned Clara around in the dark space. His breath was warm on her cheek. "I told you this house has teeth," he whispered.

"They're poisoning your medication, Julian," Clara pleaded. "We have to leave. Tonight."
