Chapter 2: The Contract and the Cage**

Clara retreated into Julian’s private study, locking the mahogany double doors behind her. The room smelled of old paper, aged bourbon, and tension.

"Sit," Julian said without looking at her. He steered his chair in front of the floor-to-ceiling monitors lining the rear wall, displaying live camera feeds from across the Vance Estate.

"I need the truth, Julian," Clara demanded, crossing her arms to stop her hands from trembling. "I signed a marriage contract to be your caregiver and social companion. You told me you needed a wife to fulfill your grandfather's trust fund conditions. You didn't say I was stepping onto a battlefield."

Julian sighed, running a hand through his dark, tousled hair. The fierce authority in his posture slipped, revealing a soul worn thin by perpetual vigilance.

"Three years ago, my parents died in a fire," he said quietly, his eyes fixed on the security monitors where two security guards in black suits patrolled the perimeter. "Six months later, my car was sabotaged. I woke up in a private hospital where every doctor was on my uncle Raymond’s payroll. They pumped me full of neurotoxins to ensure I stayed weak."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth. "Your own family?"

"In this family, blood isn't thicker than water; it's just easier to spill," Julian replied coldly. "I realized my only chance to survive and uncover the evidence of their betrayal was to let them believe they won. The wheelchair wasn't my prison, Clara. It was my armor."
