Chapter 1: The Miraculous Deception**

The air in the grand foyer froze as Julian Vance held Clara suspended against his chest. For two long years, the world believed Julian was paralyzed from the waist down—the tragic heir confined to a motorized carbon-fiber wheelchair after a suspicious brake failure on Route 9. Yet here he was, standing tall on the marble landing, his grip like iron around her waist.
Clara’s knuckles turned white against the heavy wool of his lapel. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You... you can walk?" she whispered, the tremor in her voice echoing in the cavernous stairwell.
Julian’s intense dark eyes softened, but only for a fraction of a second before a cold, calculating mask snapped into place. Instead of an apology or an explanation, his jaw tightened. He glanced down into the shadows of the lower mezzanine, scanning the security cameras hidden among the gilded moldings.
"Not a word, Clara," Julian commanded, his voice a low, raspy baritone right against her ear. "If anyone in this house knows what you just saw, neither of us will live to see sunrise."
Slowly, deliberately, he sank his weight back toward the chair, feigning a sudden stumble to disguise his strength before locking himself into the motorized seat. Clara stumbled back against the polished banister, staring at the man she had agreed to marry in a desperate contract to save her family's debts.
He wasn't a broken invalid waiting to be pitied. He was a predator waiting to strike.

"Get in," Julian muttered, flicking the wheelchair's control switch. "My uncle’s men are coming up the east wing."
