Chapter 6: The Unspoken Bond

As autumn turned to winter, the seaside estate faced the brunt of coastal storms. High winds battered the stone walls, and the ocean roared against the cliffs below.

With fewer household tasks requiring attention during the stormy season, Dominic found himself spending more time in the estate library, often inviting Clara to assist him in sorting through Julian’s personal archives. Together, they read through old journals, childhood letters, and family photographs, piecing together a clear portrait of the man they had both loved and lost.

Through these long, quiet evenings spent by the fireplace, the rigid boundaries of class and duty began to dissolve. Dominic learned about Clara’s history—how her grandfather had worked as a gardener on the estate decades ago, and how she had grown up loving the old stone walls and the sprawling rose gardens long before tragedy touched the family.

"I used to watch you and Julian play near the fountain when we were children," Clara shared one evening, looking at a faded photograph of two young boys running across the lawn. "You were always the serious one."

Dominic smiled—a genuine, warm smile that Clara realized she had rarely seen. "Someone had to keep Julian from jumping off the cliffs."

"He was impulsive," Clara agreed softly. "But he had a vision. He believed this house should be a place of shelter, not a fortress."

Dominic looked at her across the small tea table, his gaze lingering on her face. "He was right. But it takes the right people inside a fortress to make it feel like a shelter."
