Chapter 5: Shadows of the Estate

In the days following Victoria's removal, a heavy quiet fell over the estate. The servants, who had endured months of Victoria’s arbitrary cruelty and threats, worked with a renewed sense of peace, though an underlying tension remained.

Clara had returned to her quarters in the wing reserved for household staff, but the dynamic between her and Dominic had irrevocably shifted. She was no longer just the quiet maid who tended to the estate’s heirlooms; she was the keeper of the family's honor.

Dominic spent his mornings reviewing the estate’s affairs, working tirelessly with legal counsel to restore his brother’s ruined reputation and return the stolen funds to Julian’s former business partners.

One morning, Dominic walked into the sunlit morning room where Clara was polishing the family silver. He stopped near the window, watching her quiet, methodical movements.

"Clara," he said gently, breaking the silence. "You don't have to do this anymore."

Clara paused, a silver polishing cloth in her hand, and looked up at him. "Do what, sir?"

"Work as a maid in this house," Dominic said, stepping closer. "You suffered for months to protect my family's truth. You were chained to a stone pillar because you refused to surrender those documents. I cannot, in good conscience, let you remain in service here."

Clara set the silver spoon down on the velvet cloth. Her expression was calm, thoughtful, and entirely without bitterness.

"Service is not servitude, Dominic," Clara said softly. "I didn't keep those letters to earn a reward or escape my work. I kept them because Julian was a good man, and so are you. This house is my home, too."
