Chapter 11: The Storm Within

Despite the growing warmth between them, Clara found herself wrestling with lingering doubts. The societal gap between a wealthy estate owner and a former maid was a reality that external voices were quick to point out.

When news of Clara’s prominent role in the foundation—and her close personal relationship with Dominic—began to circulate in high-society circles, quiet rumors and snide remarks followed.

During a fundraising gala held in the city, several wealthy donors made subtle, patronizing comments toward Clara, questioning her background and her qualifications to stand beside Dominic Sterling.

Clara maintained her poise throughout the evening, but when they returned to the estate late that night, she slipped away to the cliffs overlooking the sea, seeking the solitary comfort of the dark waves.

Dominic found her standing near the safety railing, her formal dress rustling in the night wind.

"I saw how they looked at you tonight," Dominic said softly, walking up beside her. "I'm sorry, Clara. I should have spoken up louder."

"It's not about what they said, Dominic," Clara said, her voice carrying a rare note of vulnerability. "It's about whether I belong in your world. I was born in the servant quarters of this estate. I spent years polishing your family's silver. Some people will only ever see me as the maid who cleared their plates."
