Chapter 3: The Documents in the Study

Night fell completely over the estate, engulfing the balcony in ink-black darkness, but inside Dominic's oak-paneled study, a single desk lamp shone bright.

Clara sat in a leather armchair, a warm wool blanket wrapped around her shoulders, holding a hot cup of tea. Her hands still trembled slightly, but the strength in her voice was absolute as she watched Dominic unseal a faded leather folder she had hidden months ago inside the study's floorboards.

Dominic turned page after page. The documents were damning—bank transfer records, forged letters, and secret correspondence detailing how Victoria had manipulated Julian's finances, framing him for corporate theft while funneling millions into offshore accounts.

"Julian didn't take his own life out of guilt," Dominic realized aloud, his hands gripping the edges of the desk until his knuckles turned white. "He was trying to escape her trap."

"He came to me the night before he died," Clara said softly. "He gave me this folder. He told me that if anything happened to him, I must give it only to you—when you were ready to see who Victoria truly was."

Dominic buried his face in his hands, the weight of a year’s worth of misplaced anger and misguided protection collapsing over him. He had spent months defending Victoria out of respect for his late brother, unaware that he was keeping Julian’s destroyer under his own roof while allowing her to torment the one person who carried his brother’s legacy.

"I called you a liar once," Dominic said, looking up at Clara, his dark eyes filled with profound regret. "When you tried to warn me six months ago."

"You weren't ready then, Dominic," Clara replied gently. "Truth takes time to grow in soil choked by grief."
