Chapter 8: The Price of Pride

The settlement meeting took place in the neutral boardroom of the bank’s downtown headquarters.

Beatrice Vance sat on one side of the mahogany table, flanked by two stone-faced attorneys. She wore a dark tailored suit, but the regal arrogance that had once defined her was fractured. Her hands trembled slightly as she adjusted her glasses. Julian sat beside her, sullen and furious, his arms crossed over his chest like a reprimanded child.

Elena sat opposite them, accompanied by Sarah Lin and Marcus.

""The terms are simple,"" Sarah Lin announced, laying out the settlement contracts. ""Mrs. Beatrice Vance and Mr. Julian Vance will liquidate the Ridgecrest property assets to pay the outstanding balance of $340,000 in full to the lender. In exchange, Vanguard Studio will refrain from filing civil damages, though the state’s banking commission will proceed with its internal compliance review regarding the notary misuse.""

Julian leaned forward, his face flushed. ""You're destroying our mother's retirement!""

""You destroyed it, Julian,"" Elena answered, locking eyes with him. ""The day you asked your mother to forge a loan in someone else's name because you were too cowardly to face your creditors. You're thirty-eight years old. It’s time you learned that actions have consequences.""

Beatrice stared at Elena, her eyes burning with cold hatred. ""You think you've won, don't you? You're a cold, calculating woman. You never loved Derek. You used our family's social standing to prop up your little firm, and the moment things got difficult, you showed your true colors.""

Elena didn't raise her voice. She looked at Beatrice with an expression not of anger, but of profound pity.

""You taught your sons that love is conditional upon submission,"" Elena said. ""You made them weak so they would never leave you. I pity you, Beatrice. Because when this money is gone, you will realize that fear is not loyalty, and control is not love.""

Beatrice’s pen hovered over the settlement paper for ten agonizing seconds. With a sharp, furious scribble, she signed her name.
