Chapter 4: The Shadow in the Garden

Later that evening, Elena drove to a quiet community park on the outskirts of town. She knew that every day at five-thirty, Arthur walked their old golden retriever along the perimeter path, the only hour of the day he spent away from Beatrice’s watchful eye.
She waited near a wooden bench beneath the weeping willows. When Arthur rounded the bend, the dog wagged its tail, recognizing Elena immediately. Arthur froze, holding the leash with weathered, trembling hands.
""Elena,"" Arthur whispered, his voice cracked with age and exhaustion. He looked around instinctively, as if expecting Beatrice to emerge from the hedges.
""Sit with me, Arthur,"" Elena said gently, gesturing to the bench.
Arthur hesitated, then sat down heavily on the wooden slats. The dog rested its head on Elena’s knee.
""How is your face?"" Arthur asked softly, not daring to meet her eyes.
""It will heal,"" Elena replied. ""What won't heal is this family, Arthur. Not unless someone tells the truth.""
Arthur let out a long, ragged sigh that seemed to carry forty years of unspoken regret. ""Beatrice wasn't always like this. When Julian was young, he was sick. She spent two years fighting doctors to keep him alive. After that... she decided the world owed him everything. She blinded herself to his flaws. And when Derek came along, she taught Derek that his only purpose was to be Julian's safety net.""
""And what was your purpose, Arthur?"" Elena asked candidly.
A bitter tear leaked from the old man’s eye, catching in the deep creases of his cheek. ""To keep the peace. That’s what I told myself. 'Keep the peace, Arthur. Don't make a scene.' But keeping the peace meant watching her destroy our sons' spines. Derek doesn't know how to stand up because I never showed him how.""
Elena reached into her coat and pulled out a small folder containing the loan documents. ""Arthur, Julian didn't just borrow money. He forged my signature on commercial assets. If this goes to default, my business collapses. My employees lose their livelihoods.""
Arthur stared at the forged signatures. His hands stopped shaking, replaced by a quiet, terrible realization. ""She used the notary seal from Peter’s office.""
""Yes.""
Arthur closed the folder slowly. ""I have the original ledger, Elena. The one Beatrice keeps in the floor safe beneath the library. It tracks every transaction Julian made over the past ten years—including the kickbacks he paid to keep his shell companies afloat.""
Elena looked at her father-in-law. ""Will you give it to me?""
Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment. ""If I do, it destroys our home.""
May you like
""Your home was already destroyed, Arthur,"" Elena said with profound empathy. ""You're just living in the ruins.""
