Chapter 6: The Ledger Unlocked

Two days later, Elena met Arthur at a discreet diner on the city's east side.
Arthur slid a worn black leather notebook across the booth. Inside were handwritten logs, account numbers, dates, and wire confirmations spanning eight years. It was a meticulous record of financial manipulation: Julian’s failed restaurant, his fraudulent logistics venture, and the constant siphoning of family retirement funds to settle lawsuits before they reached the press.
""This is everything,"" Arthur said, looking older than his sixty-eight years, but with a strange, newfound lightness in his posture. ""Beatrice kept it as leverage over Julian to keep him dependent on her. She needs us to need her, Elena. That’s her sickness.""
""Why did you keep this from the police for so long, Arthur?""
""Because cowardice wears many masks,"" the old man confessed candidly. ""I told myself I was preserving my family’s dignity. But dignity built on lies is just vanity. Take it to your lawyers. Do what must be done.""
Elena placed her hand over Arthur’s weathered fingers. ""What will happen to you?""
""I’m moving into the guest cabin at the lake property,"" Arthur said with a faint, genuine smile. ""I packed my bags this morning. For the first time in thirty years, I’m going to sleep without waking up afraid of what Beatrice will demand next.""
Elena left the diner and drove straight to the legal offices of Vance & Sterling Associates, where her attorney, Sarah Lin, was waiting.
Sarah reviewed the ledger, whistling under her breath. ""This isn't just an ironclad defense against the bank’s loan enforcement, Elena. This is evidence of systemic wire fraud and tax evasion. If we hand this to the bank’s legal counsel, they will instantly drop all claims against Vanguard Studio and refer Julian and Beatrice to the district attorney.""
""Give them forty-eight hours to settle the debt through their own assets,"" Elena instructed. ""Julian owns a luxury townhouse in the suburbs, and Beatrice has her investment portfolio. They have the wealth to pay their own debts; they just prefer using mine.""
""And if they refuse?"" Sarah asked.

""Then let justice take its natural course,"" Elena replied.
