Chapter 14: The Unsent Letter

That night, after the celebration had concluded and the city had quieted down, Elena returned to her loft.

On her desk lay an envelope that had arrived via certified mail that morning. The return address was Derek’s new apartment across town.

Elena sat by the balcony with a cup of chamomile tea and opened the letter.

> *Dear Elena,*
> *I saw the photos of the library opening in the morning paper. The building is magnificent. It looks just like the sketches you used to draw on our kitchen table when we were first married.*
> *I am writing this not to ask for forgiveness, nor to ask you to come back. I know that door is permanently closed, and for the first time in my life, I understand why you had to close it.*
> *When Mom slapped you that morning, part of me died. I knew what she was doing was monstrous. I knew the debt was a lie. But I was so terrified of losing her approval that I allowed myself to become a monster too.*
> *I have started attending therapy. I got an independent job at an engineering consultancy in the north district, and I moved out of Julian’s building last week. I am learning what it means to be responsible for my own choices.*
> *You were the best thing that ever happened to me, Elena. Thank you for loving me enough to walk away when I was too weak to be the man you deserved.*
> *I wish you all the light in the world.*
> *— Derek*

Elena read the letter twice. She folded the paper carefully and placed it into a wooden keepsake box on her shelf.

There was no urge to call him, no desire to reopen the past. But she felt a deep, peaceful closure settle over her heart. The pain had not been meaningless. The fire had burned away the illusions, leaving both of them with the possibility of becoming who they were truly meant to be.
