Chapter 5: Derek’s Choice

At ten o’clock that night, Elena returned to the apartment she shared with Derek.

The living room was dark except for the amber glow of a single floor lamp. Derek was sitting on the sofa, head in his hands, an untouched mug of tea on the coffee table. When he heard her keys, he stood up instantly.

""Elena!"" He rushed toward her, his arms reaching out, but Elena took two deliberate steps backward, maintaining a strict barrier between them.

Derek stopped, hurt washing over his features. ""Elena, I’m so sorry about what happened this morning. I was in shock. Mom shouldn't have hit you. I told her that after you left.""

""You told her *after* I left?"" Elena repeated, her voice dripping with sorrow rather than anger. ""While she was screaming at me, while she was striking me in front of you, you said nothing.""

""She’s my mother, Elena!"" Derek pleaded, his voice breaking. ""She’s sixty-four years old! She had high blood pressure! What was I supposed to do, tackle her?""

""You were supposed to stand beside your wife and say: *'This is a crime, and we will not be part of it.'*"" Elena said. ""Did you know she forged my signature, Derek?""

Derek’s gaze darted to the floor. The hesitation lasted only two seconds, but in those two seconds, Elena felt the remaining embers of her marriage turn to ash.

""Julian was desperate,"" Derek muttered quietly. ""Mom told me she found a bridge loan. I didn't know she used Vanguard’s commercial lease until yesterday. I was going to tell you—""

""You were going to let me pay it,"" Elena corrected him, her voice chillingly calm. ""You were going to guilt-trip me into signing the post-dated guarantor agreement to save your brother from prison, even if it bankrupted my firm.""

""We could have made it back!"" Derek insisted, taking a desperate step forward. ""We’re young, we have careers! Julian has two kids, Elena. If he goes to federal prison, what happens to them?""

""And what happens to integrity, Derek? What happens to the truth?"" Elena shook her head slowly. ""You think you're being a good brother, but you're just feeding an addict who feeds on your spine.""

She walked into the bedroom, pulled out a suitcase, and began packing her essentials.

""Where are you going?"" Derek asked, following her into the room, panic finally piercing his defensiveness. ""Elena, please! We can go to counseling! We can set boundaries with Mom!""

""Boundaries are for people who respect walls, Derek,"" Elena said, zipping her suitcase. ""Your mother knocks them down, and you hand her the sledgehammer.""
