Chapter 10: Arthur’s Sanctuary

A month later, Elena drove two hours north into the pine-covered hills to visit Arthur at the lake property.
The small cedar cabin sat on a tranquil point overlooking the water. Smoke drifted gently from the stone chimney. When Elena pulled into the gravel drive, she found Arthur on the front porch, wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, carving a piece of driftwood with a pocketknife.
The transformation was astonishing. The stooped, haunted look in his eyes had vanished, replaced by a calm, grounded presence.
""Elena!"" Arthur smiled, standing up to welcome her with a warm, genuine hug. ""Look at you. You look like you're carrying ten pounds less of the world on your shoulders.""
""I could say the same about you, Arthur,"" Elena laughed.
They sat on the porch rocking chairs, drinking fresh cider while the autumn leaves drifted onto the porch steps.
""Beatrice tried calling last week,"" Arthur mentioned casually, watching a pair of mallards land on the glassy lake. ""She wanted me to sell the cabin so they could pay off Julian’s remaining personal loans.""
""What did you tell her?""
""I told her no,"" Arthur said simply. ""For the first time in forty-two years of marriage, I said the word 'no' without offering an apology or an explanation. She hung up on me.""
""Are you lonely up here?"" Elena asked gently.
May you like
""Peace is never lonely, my dear,"" Arthur replied, looking out over the water. ""Living with someone who demands you betray your conscience—that’s where true loneliness lives. Here, I have my books, my woodworking, and my self-respect. That is more than enough.""
