Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

The ultimatum landed like an artillery shell inside the Vance household.
Beatrice called emergency meetings with her attorneys, only to discover that Elena’s legal team held all the cards. The forged notary was facing disbarment and criminal charges; the bank had frozen Julian’s commercial accounts; and Arthur’s sudden departure had stripped Beatrice of her primary financial proxy.
On Thursday afternoon, Derek showed up at Vanguard Studio. He looked hollow-eyed, his linen shirt wrinkled and unwashed.
""Elena, please,"" Derek begged in the private conference room. ""Mom is selling her jewelry and the estate’s vintage cars. Julian had to put his townhouse on the market. They're ruined. Isn't that enough? Do you have to press criminal charges too?""
Elena sat across the glass conference table, looking at the man she had promised to love for better or worse.
""I didn't press criminal charges, Derek,"" Elena said evenly. ""I simply presented the truth to the bank. The law is doing the rest. Your family ruined themselves the moment they decided that their pride was worth more than my freedom.""
""You used my father against us,"" Derek said bitterly, his tone turning resentful. ""You manipulated a senile old man into betraying his own wife.""
Elena felt a profound sadness wash over her. Until this moment, a tiny part of her had hoped that Derek would experience an awakening—that losing his marriage would force him to grow into an independent man. But the roots of familial toxicity ran too deep. Derek was still defending the cage he was locked in.
""Arthur isn't senile, Derek,"" Elena said softly. ""He was the only person in that house who loved you enough to stop enabling your destruction. If you can't see that, then there is nothing left for us to talk about.""
She slid a document across the table.
Derek stared at the bold letters at the top of the page: **PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.**

""Sign it, Derek,"" Elena said. ""Let’s end this with whatever dignity we have left.""
