Chapter 9 - The Shattered Glass

The sound of shattering glass echoed sharply through the darkened corridor, followed by the cool rush of night air signaling an open exit to the outside world. Maya didn't hesitate; abandoning logic, caution, and fear, she threw herself sideways into the alcove where the chemistry labs were located, relying on muscle memory to navigate the pitch-black hallway. Behind her, she heard Dr. Sterling shout an order, followed by the heavy thud of Marcus dropping the tablet as a scuffle broke out in the dark. A flashlight beam cut wildly through the air, spinning in circles before pointing toward the ceiling, illuminating dust motes and erratic shadows.
"Stop her! Don't let her reach the courtyard!" Dr. Sterling's voice rang out, sharp and panicked, stripped of all its academic calm.
Maya reached the heavy oak doors of the chemistry stockroom, threw her weight against them, and tumbled inside just as a heavy boot slammed into the wood right beside her shoulder. She scrambled across the linoleum floor, knocking over a rack of plastic beakers that clattered loudly, creating a diversion that bought her a few precious seconds. She ducked beneath a long lab island, pulling her knees to her chest as the stockroom door swung wide open. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the room, illuminating rows of chemical storage cabinets and glass test tubes.
Footsteps entered the room, slow and deliberate. The beam of light danced across the floor, stopping just inches from Maya's sneakers. She held her breath, pressing her palms flat against the cold tile to steady her shaking body.
"I know you're under the table, Maya," a familiar, breathless voice whispered. It wasn't Dr. Sterling or Marcus. It was David.
David crouched down, the flashlight beam illuminating his face, which was twisted into an expression of intense, desperate urgency rather than malice. He wasn't holding the iron pipe this time; instead, he held out a small, encrypted thumb drive and a master keycard.
"Take them," David whispered quickly, glancing back over his shoulder toward the open doorway to ensure no one else was listening. "The main server room in the basement is completely unguarded right now because Vance and Sterling went to secure the perimeter. If you plug that drive into the central terminal, it will wipe the biometric databases for every student in the district."
Maya stared at the thumb drive in his hand, suspicion warring with her desperate need for an escape. "Why should I trust you? You were working with Marcus and Vance."
"Because my little sister's data is on those servers too," David said, his voice cracking with genuine emotion. "They used her panic attacks just like yours. Now take the keycard, go to the basement, and end this before they upload your complete neurological profile to the defense contractors."

Before Maya could reach out and take the drive from his hand, the stockroom lights flickered back on with a blinding flash, and the PA system crackled to life with Principal Vance’s voice announcing a complete facility lockdown and the immediate deployment of local law enforcement to the basement level.
