Chapter 1 - The Echo of Silence

The fluorescent lights of Oakridge High hummed with a cold, unforgiving frequency, casting long shadows across the linoleum floor. Maya pressed the active-noise-canceling electronic earmuffs tighter against her skull, yet the cruel laughter of Marcus still managed to bleed through the padded cushions. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, each thud echoing loudly in her ears. Around them, a circle of indifferent students pulled out their smartphones, recording the spectacle with hungry, glowing eyes. Marcus stepped closer, his varsity jacket smelling faintly of cheap cologne and menace. His eyes flashed with a cruel, amused light as he looked down at her terrified face.

"Let's see how much noise you make in the dark, zero!" Marcus yelled loudly, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the hallway.

Maya shrank back, her fingers trembling as she adjusted the volume dial on the earmuffs, trying to block out the humiliation.

"What's the matter, little mouse?" Marcus taunted, leaning in close so she could smell the mint gum on his breath. "Cat got your tongue, or did you leave your voice back in the special ed wing where it belongs?"

"Leave me alone, Marcus," Maya managed to whisper, her voice shaking violently.

"Speak up! The internet can't hear your pathetic little whispers!" Marcus laughed, gesturing to the camera phones surrounding them. "Everyone wants to see what the school ghost does when the lights go out."

Without warning, Marcus snatched at the strap of her backpack, nearly pulling her off balance. Panic surged through her veins, overriding her paralysis. She didn't think; she just reacted, wrenching herself away from his grasp and bolting down the dim, deserted corridor toward the old AV storage wing. Footsteps pounded heavily behind her on the floor, getting closer by the second. She reached the end of the hall, threw her weight against the heavy wooden door of the abandoned broadcasting room, and tumbled inside into absolute blackness. She fumbled desperately for the heavy iron lock on the inside, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the doorknob rattled violently under a sudden, forceful assault from the outside.
