Chapter 8 - The Harmonic Frequency

The cacophony of hundreds of smartphones ringing in unison created a disorienting, high-pitched wall of sound that vibrated painfully against Maya's eardrums. She instinctively clutched her head, her knees buckling slightly as the harmonic frequency of the alarms resonated with the electronic earmuffs still dangling around her neck. Marcus stood unfazed in the center of the hallway, his thumb resting casually on the glowing screen of the modified tablet while students trapped behind the glass doors of the gymnasium pounded frantically on the panes, screaming for help that would never come.

"Turn it off!" Maya screamed over the deafening noise, tears of frustration streaming down her cheeks. "What do you want from me, Marcus? Why are you doing this?"

Marcus lowered the tablet, the alarms instantly cutting out, leaving a heavy, ringing silence in their wake. He took a slow step toward her, his varsity jacket rustling in the quiet corridor.

"We aren't just testing behavioral responses, Maya," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The board isn't looking at psychology; they're building a frequency weapon. And your brainwaves are the exact blueprint they need to calibrate it for the whole city."

Before Maya could process the staggering scale of the conspiracy, a heavy metal fire door at the end of the hall creaked open, and a figure stepped out from the shadows. It wasn't another student or a corrupt guard. It was Dr. Sterling, the school district's chief neurological researcher, wearing a pristine lab coat that looked completely out of place in the battered high school hallway. He held a sleek, metallic briefcase in one hand and a black flash drive in the other, his expression one of clinical appreciation as he looked at Maya.

"Fascinating," Dr. Sterling murmured, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Her cortisol levels are spiking at a rate that defies standard neurological baselines. Marcus, hand over the tablet."

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, a flash of doubt crossing his face as he looked from Dr. Sterling to Maya. "Wait, Dr. Sterling, we didn't agree to bring the board directly into the field test. This was supposed to be a local demonstration."

"The board's patience has expired, Marcus," Sterling replied coldly, stepping forward and extending his hand for the device. "Hand it over, or your college scholarship disappears tonight along with your clean criminal record."

Maya watched the exchange, realizing that Marcus was just a pawn in a much larger, darker game controlled by the district's elite. But as Marcus slowly raised his arm to hand over the tablet, the emergency lights overhead suddenly died, plunging the entire hallway into absolute pitch blackness, followed by the sound of a heavy glass window shattering at the far end of the corridor.
