Chapter 3 - The Crimson Pulse

The pulsating red light painted the towering stacks of obsolete television monitors and tangled cables in long, bloody strokes. Maya covered her ears with her hands, but the electronic whine from the massive floor speaker was no longer just an acoustic nuisance; it was a physical force vibrating in her chest cavity. She stumbled backward, tripping over a discarded tripod that clattered loudly against the concrete floor. The sound amplified through the room's aging acoustic dampening panels, creating a bizarre, distorted echo that made it impossible to tell where reality ended and the electronic feedback began. She had to find another way out of this room before the signal repeater did something worse than just broadcast her humiliation.

Crawling on her hands and knees, she navigated the labyrinth of dusty furniture toward the back wall where the emergency fire escape hatch was supposedly located. Her fingers brushed against something cold and metallic—a heavy industrial breaker panel. She lifted her head, squinting through the crimson glare to examine the row of heavy-duty toggle switches. If she could cut the power to the AV room, she might kill the broadcast and plunge Marcus into the same darkness he had trapped her in. But as her hand hovered over the main lever, a soft, synthetic chime echoed from the speaker, cutting through the continuous hum of feedback. It wasn't random noise; it was an incoming audio file being routed directly into the room's main soundboard from an external source.

Maya froze, her breath catching in her throat as a familiar voice began to play through the giant speaker. It was her own voice, recorded weeks ago during a private therapy session in the school counselor's office, discussing her deep-seated anxieties and panic attacks. The cruel laughter of her classmates outside the heavy door swelled in volume, mixing with the playback of her most vulnerable admissions. Marcus wasn't just streaming her running away; he was dismantling her entire life piece by piece for thousands of students to consume. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, hot and fast, as anger began to mix with her terror. She grabbed the metal breaker lever and yanked it down with all her might, plunging the room into total, pitch-black silence—except for the heavy, metallic clanking of the fire escape latch slowly unlatching from the outside.
