Chapter 2 - The Iron Barrier

The heavy wooden door shuddered under a brutal impact, nearly slipping from Maya's trembling grip as she threw her full weight against it. Through the small, wire-reinforced glass window set into the upper half of the door, Marcus’s distorted face appeared like a phantom from a nightmare. The dim emergency lights from the hallway cast a sickly amber glow over his twisted features, highlighting a grin that lacked any semblance of human empathy. He pressed his phone against the glass, the screen glowing brightly to capture her terror for whatever live stream he was broadcasting to the entire student body. Maya planted the heel of her sneaker firmly against the baseboard, her muscles burning with exhaustion and adrenaline.

"You can't hide in there forever, freak!" Marcus shouted from the other side, his voice muffled slightly by the thick oak but still piercingly sharp.

"Just go away!" Maya cried out, her voice cracking with pure despair as she twisted the heavy brass deadbolt.

The mechanism clicked into place with a heavy, satisfying thunk, but the victory felt hollow. Through the reinforced glass, she watched Marcus step back and tap the screen of his phone, his lips curling into a smug, triumphant sneer. He held up a small, rectangular black box—a remote signal repeater that controlled the school's emergency lockdown overrides.

"Enjoy the broadcast, freak!" Marcus yelled angrily, his voice dripping with malice.

Before Maya could process his warning, the red emergency strobe light mounted on the ceiling of the AV room flickered to life, bathing the dusty interior in a pulsing, hypnotic crimson glow. The silence of the room was suddenly broken by a low, mechanical whine that emanated from the massive vintage speaker cabinet resting in the corner. The speaker cone vibrated violently, kicking up a cloud of gray dust from the floorboards as a feedback loop began to build, whining with a pitch that set her teeth on edge. She stepped away from the door, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she realized she wasn't just locked inside a dark room; she was trapped in a digital trap with a live audience watching her every move.
