Chapter 12 - The Blackout

The darkness was absolute, heavy, and profound. The deafening roar of the server cooling fans died instantly, replaced by a strange, high-pitched whine that slowly faded into absolute silence. Maya sat on the concrete floor, her breathing ragged and shallow in the pitch blackness, her hands still resting on the terminal keyboard. On the screen, the progress bar frozen at 89% suddenly flashed a bright, solid green, followed by a clean, automated system prompt: “Database Purge Successful. All Biometric Records Erased.”
Across the room, a heavy groan broke the silence.
"Marcus?" Maya whispered into the dark, her voice trembling.
"I'm here," Marcus's voice replied, sounding exhausted, strained, and stripped of all the arrogance that had defined him earlier in the evening. He sounded like just another terrified teenager trapped in a nightmare he never fully understood.
A moment later, the emergency backup generator kicked in with a dull thud, flooding the server room with a dim, amber-tinted work light. Maya blinked against the sudden illumination, turning to look at Marcus. He was sitting against rack seven, holding his right hand, which was bleeding slightly from where the glass fiber-optic filaments had lacerated his palm during the frantic pull. The heavy steel entrance door of the server room rattled violently, followed by the sound of muffled shouting from the hallway outside as Principal Vance and his security detail attempted to force the manual override locks from the exterior.
"They're going to break through in a minute," Marcus said, looking down at his bleeding hand with a numb, expressionless stare. "Once they get in here, we're done for. Sterling will make sure we disappear just like the rest of the records."
"Not if we have copies," a voice spoke from the doorway.
Both Maya and Marcus spun around. David was standing in the doorway—the electronic lock had been bypassed from the outside using the master keycard he still possessed. He wasn't alone; behind him stood two local police officers holding tactical flashlights, their uniforms clearly bearing the insignia of the city police department rather than the school district's private security force.

"Drop your weapons—err, tools," the lead officer commanded, stepping into the room and training his flashlight on Marcus and Maya. "Principal Vance is currently being detained upstairs for unauthorized federal data surveillance. You kids are coming with us."
