Chapter 14 - The Aftermath

The morning sun broke over Oakridge High, casting a warm, deceptive golden light across the manicured lawns and the police crime scene tape that still cordoned off the main entrance. Inside the guidance counselor's office—now serving as a temporary headquarters for federal investigators—Maya sat quietly on a folding chair, clutching a paper cup of warm water between her hands. The room was sparse, stripped of the computer terminals and monitoring equipment that had previously lined the walls. Across the small table sat Special Agent Miller, an FBI cybercrimes investigator whose calm, methodical demeanor offered a stark contrast to the chaotic energy of the previous night.

"The servers have been completely scrubbed, Maya," Agent Miller said, closing a thick manila folder and looking directly at her with steady, compassionate eyes. "The data packets intended for the defense contractors were intercepted and quarantined before they ever left the local subnet. Your records—and those of every other student in the district—are completely secure."

Maya nodded slowly, taking a small sip of the water. "What about Principal Vance and Dr. Sterling?"

"They're facing federal charges for wire fraud, illegal biometric harvesting, and violating state student privacy acts," Agent Miller replied smoothly. "The entire administrative board has been suspended indefinitely pending a full structural audit of the school district."

"And Marcus?" Maya asked, hesitation coloring her tone.

Agent Miller sighed softly, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table—a diversion hearing notice. "Marcus cooperated with our cyber unit this morning. He gave up the encryption keys for the backup relays and admitted to his role in the field tests. Because of his cooperation, he'll be entering a juvenile diversion program rather than facing adult felony charges, but he won't be returning to Oakridge High."

Maya looked at the paper, feeling a strange mix of vindication and lingering sorrow for the boy who had chosen to play a dangerous game he ultimately couldn't control. She stood up, thanking the agent, and walked out of the office into the sunlit hallway where lockers stood silent and empty. As she walked toward the front exit to meet her mother, she noticed a small group of students standing quietly by the trophy case, whispering among themselves, their smart-lanyards permanently removed from around their necks. She paused by the heavy glass doors, taking a deep, steady breath of the fresh morning air, knowing she had finally reclaimed her voice and her life from the dark.
