Chapter 5 - The Guard's Secret

The beam of the security guard's flashlight illuminated the dusty air motes dancing between David and Maya, freezing the scene in an eerie, theatrical tableau. Guard Henderson lowered his heavy metal flashlight, his weathered face showing no surprise at finding two students in a restricted, supposedly locked room after hours. Instead of demanding an explanation or reaching for his radio to call the principal, Henderson simply sighed, pulled a crumpled pack of cigarettes from his uniform pocket, and tapped one against his thumbnail. David lowered the iron pipe, his expression shifting instantly from predatory menace to a polite, rehearsed neutrality as he slipped the pipe behind his back.
"You kids really need to pick better spots to hang out," Henderson said, his voice gravelly and completely devoid of authority. "The principal's office has been getting pinged by these unauthorized network relays all evening."
"We were just wrapping up the audio club project, Mr. Henderson," David replied smoothly, his tone so disarmingly normal that Maya felt a cold spike of dread in her stomach. "Maya got a little overwhelmed by the equipment failure."
Maya pushed herself up from the floor, her hands trembling as she pointed a shaky finger at David. "He had an iron pipe! He was hunting me down! Marcus locked me in here, and David climbed through the fire escape to—"
Henderson raised a large, calloused hand, cutting her off without looking at her. "I didn't see any pipe, Maya. All I see is a couple of kids who tripped a breaker and caused a school-wide security alert. Now, your parents are already waiting in the main lobby."
Maya stared at the guard, the words sticking in her throat as a profound, chilling realization settled over her. This wasn't just a cruel prank by a few rogue bullies; the entire disciplinary structure of Oakridge High was wired into whatever sick game Marcus and David were playing. Henderson turned on his heel, gesturing for them to follow him down the dimly lit corridor toward the main administrative wing. David walked beside Maya, his shoulder brushing hers as they moved past the lockers. He leaned down slightly, his breath warm against her ear as he whispered a single, devastating sentence that made her stop dead in her tracks in the middle of the hallway.
