Chapter 6 - The Ghost Signature

Elena stared down at the paper, the swirling cursive of her signature glaring back at her from the bottom of a pre-nuptial property transfer agreement. The date stamped at the top was from three days ago—the day of their rehearsal dinner.

"This is impossible," Elena whispered, her breath catching in her throat. "I never signed this. I specifically told our attorney that my grandfather’s land was non-negotiable."

Marcus leaned in closer, his expression grim. "Julian didn't need your conscious consent, Elena. Remember the stack of paperwork you signed at the county clerk's office last week regarding the wedding venue permits? He slipped this deed right into the middle of the municipal file."

Elena felt the room spin. The memory flashed back: Julian handing her a clipboard, smiling warmly, telling her it was just a formality for the ballroom rental license. She had trusted him blindly, blinded by the illusion of a lifetime commitment.

"He tricked me," Elena breathed, her fingers clutching the edges of the folder until her knuckles turned white. "He stole my inheritance legally."

"Technically, yes," Marcus agreed quietly. "Unless we can prove coercion and forgery before the title transfer is officially registered with the state archives at midnight tonight."

Elena looked up at the clock on the grand ballroom wall. The hands pointed to 9:15 PM. They had less than three hours to intercept the digital filing before it became irreversible.

"We need to get to his office," Elena said, her voice hardening with sudden, fierce determination. She kicked off her bridal high heels, letting the expensive satin shoes clatter onto the floor, and began ripping the heavy, cumbersome layers of her white tulle skirt away to free her movement.

Marcus raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his features. "You're going to break into Vance Enterprises in a wedding dress?"

"Do you have a better idea?" Elena snapped, pulling a hairpin from her bun and letting her blonde hair cascade wildly over her shoulders.

Before Marcus could answer, a sharp noise echoed from the shattered glass near the entrance. A figure stepped out from the shadows of the broken doors—not a federal agent, not a fleeing guest, but a towering man in a dark trench coat holding a sleek, encrypted laptop.

"You won't find the original deed at the office," a deep voice rumbled.

Elena and Marcus spun around simultaneously, bracing themselves for another ambush as the stranger stepped into the harsh glare of the overhead lights.
