Chapter 11 - Lions in the Den

The wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate loomed out of the fog like jagged teeth, dripping with rain under the pale glow of security lamps. The sprawling Bel-Air mansion was completely dark, save for a single amber light burning in the second-floor study.
Marcus cut the sedan’s headlights a hundred yards down the winding residential street, coasting silently to a stop beneath the heavy canopy of an ancient oak tree.
"Arthur is home," Marcus whispered, staring up at the amber window. "Which means his private security detail is patrolling the perimeter every four minutes."
David popped open the glove compartment, pulling out a small, heavy black device with blinking blue lights. "This is a local frequency jammer. It will disable their exterior motion sensors and security cameras for exactly three minutes. That’s our window."
Elena unclipped her remaining torn tulle layers, tying the heavy fabric around her waist to make movement easier. Without her shoes, she was completely barefoot, but the damp grass of the estate lawn felt surprisingly grounding.
"What about Arthur?" Elena asked, looking at David. "He won't just hand over his biometric override code."
David offered a grim, humorless smile, sliding a small leather pouch from his coat pocket that clinked softly with metallic weight. "Let's just say my brother and I have unfinished business from a decade ago. He owes me more than a signature."
Marcus checked the clip of a small pistol he had retrieved from the car's hidden console, sliding it into his jacket pocket. "If Arthur refuses, we download the override manually from his master terminal. But it trips a silent alarm. We'll have every private guard on the property breathing down our necks in sixty seconds."
Elena took a deep, steadying breath, feeling the cool night air fill her lungs. "Then we make every second count."
David activated the jammer. Instantly, the humming security cameras mounted along the perimeter wall powered down, their red recording lights blinking out in unison.
"Go! Now!" David hissed.
The three of them scaled the low perimeter brick wall with surprising agility, dropping silently onto the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. They sprinted across the dew-soaked grass toward a side French door that led directly into the ground-floor library, which connected to Arthur’s private study via a spiral staircase.
Marcus slipped a thin metal pick into the brass keyhole of the French door. With a soft, mechanical click, the lock gave way.
They slipped inside into total darkness, the air smelling faintly of aged leather, expensive scotch, and old paper.
As they ascended the spiral staircase toward the amber-lit study, the low, muffled sound of Arthur Vance’s voice drifted down from above, speaking on a secure satellite phone.
"...I don't care about the wedding, Julian," Arthur's cold, commanding voice echoed down the stairs. "Just make sure the state registrar processes the deed before midnight, or the entire acquisition falls apart and we lose everything to the bank."
May you like
Elena’s hand tightened around her makeshift glass weapon in her pocket. She reached the top of the stairs, stepping silently onto the Persian rug of the study just as Arthur Vance turned around in his leather armchair, freezing in mid-sentence.
