Chapter 10 - The Midnight Chase

The sedan fishtailed violently as Marcus slammed it into drive, the engine roaring like an enraged animal as they rocketed toward the automated exit gate of the underground garage.

Behind them, the black ATV pursued aggressively, its high-beam headlights blinding in the rearview mirror.

"Hold on!" Marcus screamed, wrenching the steering wheel hard to the right to dodge a concrete pillar.

Elena braced her hands against the dashboard, her eyes locked on the heavy iron security gate blocking the exit ramp ahead. The gate was down, controlled by the facility's locked digital grid.

"Marcus, the gate's locked!" Elena warned, her voice cutting through the screaming engine.

"I know!" Marcus yelled back, a wild grin flashing across his face. "Good thing I never paid for comprehensive auto insurance!"

Instead of braking, Marcus pressed the accelerator all the way to the floor. The sedan surged forward, accelerating up the steep concrete ramp at terrifying speed.

David braced himself in the back seat, clutching the encrypted laptop with white knuckles. "Marcus, you absolute maniac, you're going to kill us!"

With a deafening crash of splintering wood and twisted metal, the sedan smashed straight through the automated security gate, showering the hood in sparks and jagged plastic debris before launching out into the cool, rain-slicked streets of the city.

Marcus immediately spun the steering wheel, throwing the car into a sharp turn down a narrow alleyway to lose their pursuer in the labyrinth of downtown skyscrapers.

The black ATV overshot the alley, its red taillights vanishing into the heavy night traffic on the main boulevard.

Inside the car, the only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of three survivors and the rhythmic ticking of the dashboard clock.

Elena looked down at her hands. They were stained with cake frosting, dirt, and a smear of the guard's blood. The extravagant white wedding gown she had worn with such pride hours ago was now torn, scorched, and ruined beyond recognition.

"Are we clear?" David asked, catching his breath as he opened the encrypted laptop and checked the firewall status.

Marcus glanced in the rearview mirror, checking every angle before easing his foot off the gas pedal. "For now. But they know what car I drive. We have twenty minutes before midnight, and we still need to access the main state registry server."

Elena stared out the rain-streaked window at the glittering neon lights of the city skyline. "We don't need a server room," she said quietly, an epiphany dawning on her.

Marcus and David both turned to look at her in unison.

"What do you mean?" Marcus asked.

"Julian didn't file the paperwork through a public terminal," Elena said, her voice steadying as the pieces clicked together. "He used his personal laptop, which syncs directly to his father's private home network in Bel-Air. My signature wasn't just on a PDF—it's tied to a live digital smart-contract that can only be unlocked with a biometric override from Arthur Vance himself."

David’s eyes widened in realization. "Arthur's private estate. The biometric vault in his study."
