Chapter 12 - The Patriarch's Trap

Arthur Vance didn't flinch. The aging billionaire simply set his secure satellite phone down on the mahogany desk, his cold gray eyes narrowing as he looked past Marcus and David to land directly on Elena standing in her ruined bridal gown.
"Well," Arthur said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension as he poured himself a finger of amber scotch. "If it isn't the runaway bride. I must admit, Elena, I expected more tears and fewer dramatics."
Elena stepped forward into the amber pool of light, her bare feet silent on the rug. "You ruined my family's name, you orchestrated a fraudulent marriage, and you tried to steal my grandfather's land. Did you really think we would just sit back and let you get away with it?"
Arthur chuckled, raising the crystal glass to his lips before taking a slow sip. "Steal? My dear girl, it's called business acquisition. Your grandfather made a handshake deal with me thirty years ago that he couldn't fulfill. Julian was simply executing a long-overdue debt collection."
"A debt backed by forgery and coercion isn't a business deal, Arthur—it's a felony," David interrupted, stepping out from the shadows and leveling a cold glare at his brother. "And your little scheme just ran out of time."
Arthur’s smile finally faltered, his eyes darting toward David for the first time. A flicker of genuine venom crossed the old man's face. "You. I should have had you dealt with ten years ago when I threw you out."
"You couldn't," David replied calmly, pulling the encrypted laptop out and setting it squarely on Arthur's desk. "Because I kept the master ledger. And right now, we need your biometric override to reverse the land transfer before the midnight deadline."
Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs with infuriating confidence. "And what makes you think I'll give it to you? The state registry server is fully automated. In exactly twelve minutes, the deed becomes permanent law."
Marcus stepped forward, drawing his pistol and laying it flat on the desk between them, barrel pointing safely away. "You won't give it to us willingly, Arthur? That's fine. But federal agents are already en route to this house with a federal search warrant signed by a federal judge. We don't need your cooperation anymore."
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at the pistol, then at Marcus, the realization finally dawning on him that his empire was crumbling.
Before Arthur could reach for the panic button concealed beneath his desk, Elena slammed her hand down onto the mahogany surface, leaning in close until her face was inches from his.
"You lose, Arthur," Elena whispered, her voice laced with venomous finality. "Open the vault."
Arthur hesitated, his fingers twitching above the hidden switch. But as the distant wail of approaching sirens echoed faintly from the street outside, the old man slowly pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner embedded in the side of his desk.
The master terminal hummed to life, flashing a bright green light as the cancellation protocol initiated.
