Chapter 13 - The Final Stand

"Drop your weapons! Do it now!" the lead security guard shouted, sweeping his assault rifle across the room, his red laser sight dancing over Marcus and David.

Marcus reacted instantly, diving behind a heavy mahogany bookshelf and pulling his pistol back out, while David frantically hammered the final confirmation key on the laptop to lock in the cancellation protocol before the guards could cut the power.

"Don't shoot!" Arthur commanded, holding up a hand to his guards while keeping his thumb firmly planted on the biometric scanner. "Hold your fire, you idiots!"

Elena didn't hesitate. Seizing the momentary confusion, she lunged across the desk, grabbing Arthur by the collar of his tailored shirt and pressing the jagged edge of her glass dagger directly against his throat.

"Drop your guns, or the old man bleeds right here on his own rug," Elena ordered, her voice entirely devoid of fear.

The guards froze, their laser sights waivering between Marcus and Elena. The tension in the room was so thick it felt tangible, every breath heavy with the threat of lethal violence.

"Do as she says!" Arthur choked out, genuine terror finally breaking through his stoic facade as he felt the sharp edge of the glass nick the skin of his neck.

The lead guard slowly lowered his rifle barrel, taking a half-step back. "Nobody does anything stupid. Nobody needs to die tonight."

At that exact second, a loud beep chimed from the encrypted laptop on the desk.

David slammed the screen shut with a triumphant grin. "Transfer canceled! The property deed has been successfully reverted back to Elena's family estate registry! It's done!"

Arthur let out a ragged breath, slumping back into his chair as the biometric scanner powered down automatically.

Just then, the heavy front doors of the mansion downstairs blew open, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of booted feet and shouting federal agents flooding the foyer.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" a voice echoed up the grand staircase.

The three security guards instantly dropped their weapons, raising their hands in the air as federal agents poured into the study, weapons drawn and ready.

Elena slowly lowered her glass dagger, stepping back from Arthur as two agents immediately moved in to slap handcuffs onto the billionaire's wrists.

Marcus stood up from behind the bookshelf, sliding his pistol back into his jacket, while David packed the encrypted laptop safely into his coat.

Elena walked over to the tall study window, pushing the heavy velvet curtain aside to look out at the front courtyard. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the rain-slicked grounds, casting long, dancing shadows across the lawn.

Julian was already being led out of a second police cruiser parked near the gates, his tuxedo completely ruined, his head bowed in defeat.

Clara was nowhere to be seen, having vanished into the night like a ghost of their shared deception.

Marcus walked up beside Elena, handing her a clean linen handkerchief to wipe the cake frosting and dirt from her hands.

"It's over, Elena," Marcus said softly. "You got everything back."

Elena took the handkerchief, wiping her hands clean before letting it drop to the floor. She looked at her reflection in the dark windowpane—no longer a terrified bride, no longer a victim of a corporate conspiracy.

"No, Marcus," Elena replied, a quiet, fierce smile touching her lips. "This is just the beginning."
