Chapter 2 - The Echo of a False Vow

The ballroom erupted into a chaotic murmur, guests stepping back as if Elena had transformed into a venomous snake right before their eyes. Julian groaned from the floor, blood trickling from his nose onto the immaculate white linen of his handkerchief, which he fumbled to pull from his breast pocket.
"Elena, please," Julian choked out, his voice muffled by pain and desperation. "Let me explain. It was before the wedding. It doesn't mean anything."
Elena kept her heel planted near Clara’s fallen purse, refusing to yield an inch of ground. Her silk dress rustled softly as she shifted her weight, maintaining the posture of a queen standing over a conquered battlefield.
"Before the wedding?" Elena repeated, her tone chillingly calm. "Julian, we've been engaged for three years, and you two have been sharing an apartment in the city under the guise of late-night accounting meetings. Do you take me for a fool?"
Clara finally stood up, brushing off her maroon dress with shaking hands, her freckled face twisted into an ugly snarl of defiance.
"She’s not the only one who knows, Julian," Clara snapped, her eyes darting toward the side doors. "Tell her what is actually in the safe deposit box at the downtown branch."
Julian froze mid-rise, his hand still clamped over his bleeding nose. His eyes widened in absolute panic as he stared at Clara, shaking his head frantically.
"Shut up, Clara. Don't you dare say another word," Julian hissed, lunging toward her, but a heavy-set groomsman grabbed him by the shoulders, holding him back.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her exterior remained frozen in ice. A safe deposit box? She thought she had uncovered the extent of their infidelity through the recovered text messages on Julian's dropped phone, but this revelation opened a terrifying new door.
"What safe deposit box, Clara?" Elena demanded, stepping closer to her sister, the wedding train sweeping behind her like a shroud.
Clara laughed, a bitter, hysterical sound that echoed off the high ceiling.
