Chapter 5 - The Federal Intervention

The sharp click of heavy boots on the polished oak floor echoed like gunshots through the silent ballroom. Three federal agents in tactical vests strode into the room, their expressions grim and unyielding. The lead agent, a tall woman with silver-streaked hair pulled back into a tight bun, scanned the room before locking her eyes directly on Julian.

"Julian Vance?" the agent called out, her voice cutting through the heavy tension like a razor. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage."

Julian froze mid-motion, a glob of white wedding cake still clinging to his right shoulder. His mouth opened and closed soundlessly like a fish out of water.

"There's... there's been some kind of mistake," Julian stammered, holding up his hands defensively as the agents closed in around him. "My lawyer—"

"Your lawyer is currently being picked up at his downtown office," the agent interrupted, stepping forward and snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists with practiced efficiency. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Elena watched the arrest unfold with a detached sense of numbness. She didn't feel the triumph she had anticipated when she first planted her shoe on Clara’s face. Instead, a hollow ache settled deep in her chest. She turned her head slowly to look for her sister, only to find the space beside the fallen cake completely empty. Clara had vanished into the panicked crowd of escaping guests.

Marcus stepped up beside Elena, sliding the manila folder onto a nearby cocktail table without breaking eye contact.

"She slipped out the side service exit," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of any triumph. "Clara always was a coward when the ship started to sink."

Elena turned her gaze to Marcus, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "And you? Why are you helping me, Marcus? You share the same last name as the man who just tried to ruin my family."

Marcus offered a thin, melancholic smile, sliding his hands into his pockets. "Because my father destroyed our mother the exact same way twenty years ago. I've been waiting a very long time to see him burn."

Elena stared at the manila folder, the weight of the conspiracy finally pressing down on her shoulders. Julian was being led away in handcuffs, shouting protests over his shoulder, but the federal agents paid him no mind.

"There's more in this folder, isn't there?" Elena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Marcus nodded slowly, stepping aside to let her reach for the documents. "Everything you need to take down Vance Enterprises for good. But there's one catch—your signature is already on page forty."

Elena’s blood ran cold. She reached out with trembling fingers and flipped open the heavy cardboard cover of the folder, her eyes scanning the first document.

"What do you mean, my signature is on page forty?" she demanded, looking up at Marcus in horror.

Marcus pointed a steady finger down at the bottom of the page, where her own bridal handwriting stared back at her from a document she had never seen before.
