Chapter 9 - Ambush in the Dark

The darkness in the basement lasted only a fraction of a second before the emergency backup generator kicked in with a low, industrial hum, casting a sickly yellow hue over the concrete walls. Julian didn't wait for Elena or the terrified lawyer. He spun on his heel and sprinted up the basement stairs with explosive speed, taking them three at a time. The heavy wooden door burst open as he slammed his shoulder against it, propelling himself into the main hallway and toward the front entrance.
"Lily!" Julian roared, bursting out onto the front porch just as the rain began to pelt the pavement in heavy, stinging sheets.
The emergency lights of the police cruisers were still flashing, casting strobing crimson and blue shadows across the front lawn. But the SUV where Lily and Elena had been waiting was surrounded. Two burly men in black tactical gear, bearing no department insignia, were actively trying to force open the passenger-side door of the vehicle. Through the rain-streaked window, Lily could be seen pressing her small hands against the glass, crying out in terror as she kicked fiercely at the door panel.
Before Julian could charge down the steps, Detective Elena Vance burst out of the house behind him, her weapon already drawn and leveled at the nearest assailant.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head!" Elena shouted over the roaring wind and pouring rain.
The two thugs froze. One of them, a massive brute with a jagged scar across his cheek, slowly turned around, pulling a heavy-duty industrial crowbar from his belt rather than raising his hands. He flashed a wicked, toothy grin at Julian and Elena.
"Boss says the package comes with us," the thug growled, lunging directly toward the driver's side door of the SUV where the keys were still in the ignition.
Julian vaulted off the porch railing, clearing the flower beds in a single bound. He hit the wet grass running, closing the distance between himself and the assailant with terrifying velocity. Before the thug could shatter the driver's window, Julian slammed into him like a freight train, driving his shoulder straight into the man’s chest and sending them both crashing hard onto the wet gravel driveway.
The thug grunted, swinging the heavy crowbar wildly in a desperate arc. Julian ducked beneath the wild swing, delivering a brutal, lightning-fast right hook that caught the man squarely on the jaw. The brute slumped backward, unconscious before his head even hit the pavement.
Across the hood of the SUV, Elena had already forced the second assailant to his knees, her service weapon pressed firmly against the back of his neck as she snapped handcuffs over his wrists with practiced efficiency.
"You're done, stay down!" Elena barked, securing the second thug against the fender of the cruiser.
Julian scrambled up from the gravel, panting heavily as he ripped open the passenger door of the SUV. Lily threw herself into his arms instantly, sobbing hysterically as she buried her face in his wet jacket. Julian pulled her tightly against his chest, whispering frantic words of comfort while checking her over for any injuries.
"Are you okay, sweetheart? Did they hurt you?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with adrenaline and fear.
Lily sniffled, wiping her tear-stained face with her sleeve as she looked up into his eyes. She held up her small hand, clutching a torn piece of black fabric she had managed to rip from the jacket of the first attacker during the struggle.
"I'm okay, daddy," Lily whispered bravely, though her lower lip still trembled. "He tried to open the door, but I kicked him really hard."
Julian managed a proud, watery smile, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. Elena jogged over, securing the area and radioing for backup transport for the new prisoners. The second thug, pinned against the cruiser, glared at Julian with undisguised venom.
"You think you stopped us by grabbing the safe?" the thug snarled, spitting blood onto the wet pavement. "You don't even know what Victoria hid in the attic of her family's downtown penthouse."
May you like
Julian froze, locking eyes with the captured assailant as a cold dread settled over his stomach. "What's in the penthouse?"
