Chapter 11 - The Countdown Begins

The harsh red glare of the emergency security system bathed the narrow corridor in an eerie, pulsing light. A synthetic countdown voice echoed from the hidden annex’s internal speakers, counting down the seconds in a calm, robotic cadence.
One hundred and seventy-nine seconds. One hundred and seventy-eight seconds.
Julian stared at the flashing digital display on the biometric keypad, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ached. He reached out to grab the handle of the heavy steel door, but it remained locked tight, sealed by an impenetrable electronic bolt.
"Can you bypass it?" Julian demanded, looking down at Elena as she frantically tapped commands into her forensic laptop connected to the system port.
"They hardcoded a remote trigger into the primary server," Elena answered, sweat beading on her forehead as her fingers blurred across the keyboard. "If anyone accesses this annex without the master physical override key, the entire database incinerates itself via a localized thermite charge built into the wall cavity."
Julian remembered the small, black cryptographic drive Attorney Pendelton had handed him down in the basement. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled it out, holding it up like a lifeline.
"Will this work?" Julian asked urgently, thrusting the drive toward Elena. "Pendelton said this was Clara’s secondary encrypted key!"
Elena snatched the drive from his hand and slammed it into the auxiliary port on her laptop. The screen flashed yellow, reading AUTHENTICATING... while the room’s robotic voice relentlessly ticked down the seconds.
One hundred and twenty seconds. One hundred and nineteen seconds.
Across the room, the sudden noise and flashing red lights caused Lily to stir from her sleep on the white leather armchair. The little girl sat up abruptly, rubbing her eyes with her small fists, her expression shifting from sleepy confusion to sheer panic as she saw the crimson glow bouncing off the walls.
"Daddy?" Lily cried out softly, scrambling off the chair and running directly toward Julian, burying her face in his leg.
Julian scooped her up into his arms with one swift motion, keeping her back turned away from the blinding red lights while keeping his eyes locked on Elena’s screen.
"Hold on, pumpkin, we're almost out of here," Julian reassured her, though his own heart was hammering wildly against his ribs.
Ninety seconds. Eighty-nine seconds.
"Come on, come on," Elena muttered under her breath, her face pale as the progress bar on her laptop crawled at a agonizingly slow pace. "Clara, give me the handshake protocol... work!"
With a sharp, triumphant chime, the laptop screen flashed solid green. The heavy biometric door to the hidden annex clicked loudly, the electronic deadbolts retracting into the frame with a satisfying mechanical thud.
Thirty seconds. Twenty-nine seconds.
Julian didn't hesitate. He kicked the heavy steel door wide open, stepping into the dark annex just as the red countdown voice hit its final warning. Inside, the room was lined with banks of enterprise-grade server racks, glowing with a soft blue light. In the center of the room sat a heavy oak desk covered in physical ledgers, audio cassette tapes, and a large, open leather-bound journal bearing Clara’s handwriting on the top page.
Elena rushed past Julian, slamming her laptop onto the desk and connecting a high-speed data transfer cable directly into the master server rack.
"Downloading the primary archive now!" Elena yelled over the hum of the cooling fans. "We have the core financial records, the offshore wire transfers, and the voice logs of Victoria planning the car accident!"

Julian stepped closer to the desk, his eyes falling upon Clara’s open journal. He reached out with a trembling hand and picked up the book, his fingers bru
