Chapter 3 - The Sealed Envelope

Julian remained kneeling on the velvet carpet, one arm securely wrapped around Lily’s waist while his free hand reached out to accept the heavy manila envelope. The woman who delivered it was none other than Clara’s lifelong best friend, Detective Elena Vance, though her badge was tucked neatly inside her designer handbag tonight. Elena’s presence in the hotel had not been an accident; she had spent the past three months tracking a paper trail that led straight from Victoria’s pristine credit history to a series of offshore accounts bearing Clara’s forged signature. Julian stared at the thick cardboard envelope, his instincts warning him that the nightmare in the ballroom was merely the opening act of a much darker tragedy.

"What is this, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice low and dangerous, carrying the weight of a man whose world had imploded in less than sixty seconds.

Elena pulled up an armchair, sitting down directly across from them. She cast a gentle, reassuring glance toward Lily before meeting Julian’s intense gaze. The ballroom music still thudded faintly through the walls, a surreal soundtrack to the unraveling of a monstrous fraud.

"Insurance policies, Julian," Elena answered evenly. "Three separate policies totaling two million dollars, all taken out on Clara’s life exactly six weeks before her fatal car accident. And look at the signature on the beneficiary line. It isn't Lily. It’s Victoria Sterling."

Julian felt the air rush out of his lungs as if he had taken a physical blow to the stomach. Clara’s accident had been ruled a tragic mishap on a slick mountain pass, a sudden swerve that plunged her car into the ravine. Julian had mourned his sister with a grief so profound it had nearly broken him, relying on Victoria’s warm shoulder and comforting words to guide him through the darkest days. Victoria had been the one to organize the estate, the one to comfort grieving little Lily, the one who promised to heal their broken home. The realization that Victoria had orchestrated Clara’s death to fund her lavish lifestyle and secure her social standing hit Julian with the suffocating force of an avalanche.

Lily shifted in his arms, sensing the sudden spike of tension in her father’s body. She clutched a corner of the manila envelope, her young mind struggling to comprehend the heavy words hanging in the air.

"Is Aunt Clara's bad accident because of her?" Lily whispered, her innocent voice cutting straight through the dense fog of Julian’s rage.

Julian swallowed hard, forcing his expression to soften as he looked into his daughter’s eyes. He placed both hands gently on her shoulders, needing her to understand the absolute boundary of his protection.

"We are going to find out the absolute truth, sweetheart," Julian vowed, his voice steady and resolute. "Nobody gets away with hurting our family."

Before Elena could detail the contents of the file, the heavy emergency exit door at the end of the corridor banged open. Victoria strode down the hallway, her white wedding gown bunched up in her fists, her face twisted in an ugly snarl of desperation and fury. The glamorous bride had completely vanished, replaced by a cornered predator ready to strike. She marched directly toward their alcove, her heels clicking like a relentless countdown.

"Julian, you are making a massive mistake!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "You are letting an ungrateful brat and a bitter interfering detective ruin our entire lives over a hacked video!"

Julian rose slowly to his feet, keeping Lily safely behind him. He towered over Victoria, his cold, dead-eyed stare stopping the bride dead in her tracks just inches away.

"Your little game is over, Victoria," Julian said quietly, lifting the manila envelope for her to see. "And the police are already waiting in the lobby."
