Chapter 5 - The Phantom at the Gates

The live video feed on Julian’s phone flickered as the camera adjusted to the motion sensor floodlights illuminating the long gravel driveway of his suburban estate. A sleek, midnight-black sedan was parked haphazardly across the front steps, its engine idling and exhaust billowing into the chilly night air. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs as he watched a tall, sharply dressed man step out of the driver's seat. The man adjusted his lapels, looked directly into the security lens with an eerie, familiar smirk, and casually walked up to the front door. Julian recognized the face instantly, and the sudden realization sucked all the oxygen straight out of the room. It was Marcus Sterling, Victoria’s estranged brother and a convicted white-collar criminal currently supposed to be serving a federal sentence in a medium-security facility two states away.
Julian looked up from his phone, his eyes blazing with a fury that made even Elena take an instinctive half-step back.
"Your brother," Julian said, his voice dangerously low as he glared at Victoria. "He's at my house."
Victoria’s manic laughter subsided into a smug, triumphant smirk. She smoothed the front of her ruined wedding gown with agonizing slowness, clearly reveling in the sudden panic she had inflicted.
"Marcus always was a loyal brother," Victoria purred, her tone dripping with toxic confidence. "Did you really think I’d leave my entire future up to chance? A prenuptial agreement is just paper, Julian. But a signed deed transferring ownership of the estate to an immediate blood relative of the bride? That’s legally binding property law."
Elena snapped her notebook shut with a sharp crack. She stepped forward, her professional demeanor instantly replacing her previous calm.
"Transferring property under duress and utilizing a forged power of attorney constitutes grand larceny and federal fraud," Elena stated coldly, tapping her phone screen to initiate a rapid call to local dispatch. "Marcus breaking into that house is an active felony in progress. The county sheriff's department is three minutes away."
Victoria’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but she quickly recovered, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder with calculated arrogance.
"Good luck proving he broke in when he has the master key and a notarized deed sitting right on your kitchen counter," Victoria retorted, leaning back in her chair. "By the time the police sort out whose name is on the title, everything inside that house—your bank accounts, Clara’s safe deposit box, and every heirloom your family ever owned—will be liquidated and transferred offshore."
Julian didn't waste another breath on her. He turned sharply toward the door, his mind racing with the terrifying thought of Lily’s home, her bedroom, and all the fragile remaining memories of Clara being ransacked by a pair of ruthless grifters. He pulled open the heavy holding room door, stepping out into the hallway where Lily was currently sitting quietly on a plush bench, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea provided by a sympathetic hotel manager. Lily looked up immediately, her wide, trusting eyes locking onto Julian’s grim face.
Julian crouched down beside her, forcing his features to soften despite the volcanic rage boiling beneath his skin.
"We need to go home right now, sweetheart," Julian said softly, gently taking her small hand. "Someone is trying to take our house. Are you brave enough to ride with me?"
Lily nodded firmly without a moment of hesitation, her freckled nose twitching as she set the teacup down. She stood up straight and squared her shoulders, displaying a quiet resilience that made Julian’s chest ache with pride.
"I'm brave, daddy," Lily whispered, her voice steady and clear. "I'm not scared of them anymore."
Elena joined them in the corridor, sliding her phone back into her blazer pocket with a grim expression.
"The local sheriff intercepted the alarm signal," Elena reported quietly to Julian as they rushed toward the private hotel exit. "They have units swarming the property right now. But Julian... Marcus didn't go there alone. Look at your phone again. The neighbor's drone feed just uploaded."

Julian pulled out his device as they jogged toward his waiting car. He tapped the new notification, and the aerial camera view revealed a second vehicle parked around the back of the house—a moving truck backed directly up to the French doors of the ground-floor nursery.
