Chapter 10 - The Penthouse Secret

The rain drummed a relentless tattoo against the roof of Julian’s SUV as they sped through the downtown streets, trailing closely behind an unmarked federal transport vehicle carrying the two arrested thugs. Elena rode in the passenger seat, tapping furiously on her laptop as the digital display illuminated her sharp features in a pale blue glow. In the back seat, Lily had finally worn herself out from the sheer terror of the evening, falling fast asleep with her head resting comfortably on a rolled-up jacket and her small hand still clutching the torn piece of black fabric she had taken from the attacker.

Julian kept his eyes glued to the slick asphalt ahead, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel. The thug's parting words echoed relentlessly in his mind: You don't even know what Victoria hid in the attic of her family's downtown penthouse.

"Elena," Julian said, breaking the heavy silence inside the cabin. "What is the history of the Sterling family penthouse? Victoria always claimed it was just an inherited property from her grandfather."

Elena didn't look up from her screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard with rapid precision.

"Her grandfather was Arthur Sterling Sr., the founder of the investment firm," Elena replied, her voice taut with concentration. "He died under mysterious circumstances ten years ago, leaving the entire estate to Victoria and Marcus. But according to municipal zoning records, the penthouse has a sealed architectural annex on the top floor that was never officially registered with the city tax assessor."

Julian frowned, navigating a sharp turn around a rain-slicked corner. "An unregistered annex? In a high-rise building?"

"Exactly," Elena confirmed, turning the laptop screen toward Julian to display a complex 3D schematic of the building’s structural blueprints. "Look at the ventilation shafts and the electrical grid layout. There is an entire hidden room built into the structural core of the penthouse—a room completely shielded from electronic surveillance and thermal imaging."

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. "A panic room? Or a server room?"

"Better," Elena said grimly, tapping a highlighted file on her desktop. "It’s a private data archive. If Victoria and Marcus were running an offshore embezzlement ring, that hidden annex is where they kept the physical ledger books, the bearer bonds, and backup hard drives containing every transaction they ever made."

Ten minutes later, the convoy pulled up in front of the towering glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the Sterling penthouse. The city skyline was shrouded in thick fog and a relentless downpour. Elena flashed her federal badge to the night security guard at the lobby desk, bypassing the front desk protocol entirely. Julian carried a sleeping Lily in his arms, refusing to leave her behind in the car after the terrifying close call at the estate. They rode the private elevator up to the top floor in absolute silence, the digital floor numbers ticking upward with agonizing slowness.

When the elevator doors slid open, they stepped directly into the lavish, dimly lit foyer of the penthouse. The decor was aggressively modern, featuring stark white leather furniture, black marble floors, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked city. Yet, the space felt hollow, stripped of any genuine warmth, much like Victoria herself.

Elena led the way toward the rear hallway, checking the architectural blueprints against the wood-paneled walls. She stopped in front of a massive, intricately carved bookcase filled with heavy antique law books.

"According to the schematics, the latch to the hidden annex is right behind this shelf," Elena instructed, running her hands along the wooden molding.

Julian gently shifted sleeping Lily to a comfortable armchair in the corner of the room, ensuring she was entirely safe before stepping forward to assist. He gripped the edge of the heavy mahogany bookcase and pulled with all his might. With a low, mechanical grinding sound, the entire shelving unit swung outward on heavy steel hinges, revealing a dark, narrow corridor lined with concrete walls and a heavy biometric keypad door.

Elena pulled out her portable forensic scanner, plugging it directly into the interface port beneath the keypad. As the system booted up with a sharp beep, the screen flashed a security warning that made both of them freeze.
