Chapter 1 - The Shattered Reception

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Hotel ballroom refracted millions of glittering prisms across the sea of formal black-tie attire and pastel gowns. It should have been the happiest night of Victoria’s life. The ivory silk of her designer wedding gown pooled around her expensive shoes like sea foam, yet her posture was rigid, carved from pure malice. Just feet away, eight-year-old Lily stood frozen, clutching a heavy silver microphone in her small, trembling hands. Lily’s white and pink dress seemed suddenly too fragile for the heavy air of the room. The large projection screen mounted high above the magnificent stone fireplace still flickered with the final, damning frames of a video that had changed everything.
Victoria lunged forward, her face contorted in a mask of pure rage. The veins in her neck strained against her pearl necklace as she shrieked at the terrified child.
"Shut that microphone off right now!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking with absolute panic. "Get away from here, you little parasite!"
Lily flinched violently, tears spilling over her freckled cheeks as she let out a muffled sob. Without a shred of hesitation, Victoria shoved past the crying flower girl with brutal force. The impact sent Lily sprawling hard onto the polished marble floor. The heavy microphone slipped from her small fingers, clattering loudly against the stone, its amplified feedback echoing through the stunned silence of the room. A collective gasp rose from the assembled wedding guests, who stood frozen in absolute shock, their champagne flutes half-raised in disbelief.
Before the echoes of the heavy thud could fade, Julian crossed the distance between the sweetheart table and the fallen child like a striking hawk. His black tuxedo jacket flared as he dropped to his knees, scooping the sobbing girl into his protective arms. Julian pulled Lily tightly against his chest, shielding her frail body from the venomous glare radiating from the woman he had married less than an hour ago. Julian glared up at Victoria, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently near his mouth.
"Nobody touches that child!" Julian roared, his voice deep, resonant, and dripping with a sudden, lethal fury that silenced every whisper in the hall.

Julian turned sharply away from Victoria, his broad shoulders squared as he stepped forward, carrying the weeping girl toward the exit. The guests parted instinctively, their wide eyes shifting between the towering groom and the blonde bride left standing in isolation under the giant screen. That screen, moments earlier, had broadcasted a loop of Victoria secretly mocking Julian’s late sister and plotting to abandon Lily at a boarding school the very next morning. Victoria’s chest heaved as she watched her husband turn his back on her, realizing her meticulously constructed web of lies had completely unraveled. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could utter another fabricated excuse, a security guard stepped forward from the shadows, holding a ringing phone up toward Victoria and whispering two words that made her blood run cold.
