Chapter 8 - The Desperate Defense

Attorney Arthur Pendelton tumbled down the bulkhead stairs, clutching his silk tie as if it were choking him. His silver hair was plastered to his forehead by the pouring rain that had suddenly started outside, and his tailored Italian suit was ruined by mud and grass stains. Julian stood up slowly, keeping himself between the terrified lawyer and Clara’s heavy steel lockbox while Elena instinctively kept her hand resting near her weapon.
"Mr. Vance! Thank God you're still here!" Pendelton gasped, holding his hands up defensively as he scrambled to his feet on the concrete floor. "I came as fast as I could. I had to break my own professional code to get here before they silence me too!"
Julian glared at the frantic man, remembering Pendelton standing proudly beside Victoria in the courtroom during various civil filings over the past year.
"Silence you?" Julian scoffed, taking a menacing step forward. "You spent the last six months helping Victoria draw up fraudulent deeds and forged insurance claims. Why should I believe a single word coming out of your mouth now?"
Pendelton shivered violently, his eyes darting toward the hidden cavity in the foundation and Clara’s lockbox. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking frail and utterly defeated.
"Because Victoria and Marcus didn't just target your sister," Pendelton stammered, his voice cracking with genuine panic. "They are planning to liquidate every asset tied to the firm and flee the country tonight. When I tried to pull out of the settlement agreement an hour ago, Marcus’s associates cornered me in the hotel parking garage. They beat me, Julian! They told me I was next if I didn't hand over the master decryption keys to the corporate trust accounts!"
Elena stepped forward, her investigator instincts kicking in as she appraised the bruises blooming across the attorney's jaw.
"Where are the decryption keys, Arthur?" Elena demanded sharply. "And don't bother lying; we already found Clara’s safe."
Pendelton stared at the heavy steel box on the floor, his eyes widening in horror. "Clara’s safe... you found it? Then you know about the Sterling & Associates slush fund. Clara discovered that Victoria and Marcus were systematically draining their elderly clients' retirement accounts to fund their lavish lifestyle. When Clara threatened to go to the FBI, they staged her accident. But Clara was smarter than they realized. She suspected they were tracking her movements, so she gave me a secondary encrypted flash drive for safekeeping just hours before she died."
Julian felt a hot tear slip down his cheek, the grief for his lost sister merging with an overwhelming surge of fierce vindication. Clara had known the risks, and she had fought until her final breath to protect the innocent.
"Where is the flash drive, Arthur?" Julian asked, his voice dead calm, though every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring.
Pendelton reached into his inner jacket pocket with trembling fingers, pulling out a small, black cryptographic drive attached to a silver keychain. He held it out toward Julian like an offering of peace.
"It contains every bank transfer, every forged signature, and recorded phone calls of Victoria bragging about how easily she manipulated you into marriage," Pendelton whispered. "Take it to the federal prosecutor downtown. It’s the final nail in their coffin."

Julian reached out and took the flash drive from the lawyer's hand, feeling the cold metal surface send a shiver through his palm. Just as their fingers parted, the overhead lights in the basement flickered violently and died, plunging the room into absolute, pitch-black darkness. A sharp, piercing shriek echoed from the main floor above—the unmistakable sound of Lily screaming in terror from inside the parked SUV.
