Chapter 4 - The Confession Room

The sterile, windowless holding room in the basement of the Grandview Hotel felt worlds away from the glittering crystal chandeliers upstairs. The management had quickly cooperated with Detective Elena Vance, turning over a vacant VIP security suite to handle the crisis far away from the remaining bewildered wedding guests. The air inside the room smelled faintly of ozone and old leather. Victoria sat rigidly on a straight-backed metal chair, her pristine white wedding gown looking violently out of place against the drab gray walls. Her makeup was slightly smeared from frustrated tears, yet her chin remained stubbornly raised as she glared across the small laminate table at Julian.

Julian stood near the closed door, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his gaze fixed on Victoria with an expression of utter disgust. Elena leaned against the corner of the table, flipping open a silver-bound notebook and clicking a ballpoint pen with a sharp, rhythmic snap.

"You can't hold me here," Victoria spat, her voice dripping with venom. "This is kidnapping, false imprisonment, and harassment. My lawyer will tear this hotel apart before midnight."

"Your lawyer is currently too busy answering federal subpoenas regarding wire fraud and identity theft," Elena replied smoothly, not even looking up from her notes. "We have the bank routing numbers, Victoria. We have the text messages you sent to Clara’s mechanic tampering with the brake lines of her SUV. And best of all, the security footage from the garage shows you wearing that exact diamond tennis bracelet you're wearing right now."

Victoria’s composure fractured instantly. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin a pasty, sickly white. Her gaze darted desperately toward Julian, searching for any trace of the devoted fiancé she had manipulated for two years. She forced a wet, trembling smile, letting out a high-pitched, theatrical laugh designed to evoke pity.

"Julian, you know me!" Victoria pleaded, her voice dropping into a syrupy, manipulative cadence. "They are lying to you! The grief made you paranoid after Clara died, and these people are exploiting your trauma! I love you! I love Lily!"

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply took two slow steps toward the table, leaning down until his eyes were level with hers.

"Don't say her name," Julian whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, controlled fury. "You spent two years pretending to love my daughter while you plotted to put her in an orphanage the moment the ink dried on our marriage certificate. I saw the video, Victoria. I heard every word you said to your mother on the phone about getting rid of the excess baggage."

Victoria swallowed hard, her eyes darting frantically around the room as she realized there was no escape hatch left. The facade had completely crumbled, exposing the hollow, greedy narcissist beneath the designer dress and diamond tiara. She gripped the edge of the laminate table, her manicured fingernails scratching against the surface with a harsh, grating sound.

"You think you've won, don't you?" Victoria hissed, her voice turning venomous and cold as ice. "You think you're such a noble hero rescuing your precious little orphan. But you're too late, Julian. Look at your phone."

Julian frowned, pulling his cell phone from his tuxedo pocket. The screen flashed with an urgent alert from the home security system at his estate across town. A red warning banner blinked relentlessly, accompanied by a live camera feed showing the front gate sliding open.

"What did you do?" Julian demanded, his blood running cold as he tapped the video feed.

Victoria threw her head back and laughed, a shrill, manic sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

"I didn't do anything," Victoria sneered, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Except give the keys to someone who has a much better claim to that house than you do."
