Chapter 2: The Card of Absolution**

Julianne’s throat tightened as she watched the most feared CEO in the city kneel before a child in scuffed sneakers.
“Damian,” Julianne hissed quietly, trying to salvage the situation. “What is this? The board meeting starts in fifteen minutes. Who is this boy?”
Damian didn’t look at her. His hands trembled as he reached out, hovering just above Leo’s shoulders before gently resting on the boy’s denim jacket. “Where is she, Leo? Where is Sarah?”
Leo pulled a small, worn photograph from his pocket. The edges were fraying, showing a much younger Damian standing beside a woman with radiant eyes outside a modest bakery. “Mom couldn't come. She’s at St. Jude’s. She said the black card isn't for money—she said it was a promise that you’d listen if I brought it back myself.”
The staff stood transfixed. Years ago, before Damian built his empire from steel and glass, he had walked away from the only woman who loved him for his heart rather than his wealth. He had left her with a prototype keycard—a coded token tied to his private vault and personal line—promising he would return once he proved himself worthy. But wealth had consumed him, and the promise had been buried beneath towers and acquisitions.
Damian carefully took the card from Leo’s hand. His thumb traced the laser-etched initials on the corner: *D & S*.
“You shouldn't have had to ride the bus alone across the state to find me,” Damian whispered, a tear escaping down his cheek.
Leo wiped his own nose with the sleeve of his jacket. “Mom said a man doesn't break a promise. He just sometimes forgets where he put it.”
